How to Save Money at UF Pet Emergency Treatment Services, Ocala

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We cannot thank the doctor and staff enough for the kindness they showed us and our sweet boy and are so grateful that they were able to give him the comfort he needed before he passed. Having your pet experience a medical emergency is never convenient, but having it happen at 4am on a Sunday when you’re on vacation in a rural area felt like a nightmare. Thankfully the UF Emergency Vet Clinic was only a 25 minute drive from where we were staying, and the staff was able to get our dog in immediately and were able to help us make the decision to humanely euthanize our senior dog so that he didn’t continue to suffer. Thank you for providing emergency veterinary services and compassionate treatment in an area where options are limited. Without you our dog would have suffered, we are so grateful for the comfort you gave him and us.

Very clean office, caring staff and the doctor was amazing. Explained why our pet canine was still having problems after her surgery. He was extremely knowledgeable. He discovered the problem and handled it accordingly. Would definitely take my pets to this ER in the future. Plenty of parking next to a karate-type school which was closed. The parking lot needs to be picked up and people need to quit dumping garbage out the window. The garbage wasn't from the animals, if you know what I mean. Otherwise, situated with other professional offices. Nicely landscaped area. We came in the back way. Not too far from the interstate. Our wait time was a bit long but they had two extreme emergencies which they communicated to us. So understandable. Also, there were quite a number of others seeking ER services for their pets. My pet is a totally different dog from their care. She wouldn't stop crying until the visit. Amazing. No followup with original surgeon required. Everything handled in one visit.

We came in on a Wednesday night because my 20 year old girl was nearing her end. She seemed to be in pain so we made the decision to take her in so that she could go comfortably. The staff was amazing. They were kind and showed great empathy, and made her departure so peaceful. Doctor Frazier was absolutely amazing. She really helped us. Thank you so much for taking care of our sweet girl. We are forever grateful!

The facility was bright, clean and the staff were friendly . I came in late with my 12 year old golden for an ear infection .Missy is very overweight and is need of a good groom. That will occur when we go back to Jersey in April. Missy also suffers from a partial tear in her ACL. This can only be treated with surgery. She can only walk for short periods of time and then has to lay down. It was advised that she needed to loose weight. I agreed completely. I said she also needs exercise. I bought in a professional pet wheelchair and asked for help fitting her into it. She would be able to take walks and build up muscle. I am here alone and need help sizing her correctly. I have a video the company’s vet endorsed. Video instructions are also provided . I was refused help due to liability issues. Understandable. There was no suggestion given or regret for not being able to help. What would he advise for a dog who has lost its ability to walk. I’m imagining euthanasia. There is no desire to think outside of the box or improve pet services. I expected more from this place. I would hope he would have consulted with the vet that is familiar with these wheelchairs to serve future patients. I love dogs and happen to be in the business. I find that vets as well as other physicians are very closed minded. This vet was typical.

We were away but had placed our sweet dog with a trusted and loving relative with whom our dog was always happy. A couple days alter, our dog began having serious symptoms of sickness. After two or three days of 'home treatment," and our regular veterinarian was away, we needed to find good help on a Sunday. We were hundreds of miles away, but by going online, we could talk with a kind staff member who listened to our concerns with compassion. She helped arrange for our dog's diagnosis and corrective treatment and kept us informed with each step. I was prepared for a very sad outcome, but by taking 'conservative' steps before doing more exploratory treatment of our 13-year-old deaf and blind furry family member, our dog began improving. Our loved one, who also loves our dog, continued administering the medications, etc... Now we are home and our dog is basically back to normal. We so appreciated the kind treatment of both the dog and all of us "parents/loved ones" of our dog. I would recommend their services.
