How to Save Money at Skylark Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Fantastic vet office with good customer service, fair pricing, most of the staff are gentle with the animals and seem to genuinely love taking care of them. Dr. Nelson has an incredible bedside manner that puts our little guy at ease every time. We are very happy and comfortable with bringing our babies here for great care. The pics below are of our little boy Sparky and little girl Pebbles.

I love Dr. Nelson he always cares for my cats like he's taking care of his own. He's very willing to explain things a second time to make sure we understand what's going on.

Wow. I was completely shocked after reading the reviews….. I thought this was a lovely veterinarian office until after I had to pick my pup up….. First and foremost, before I even dropped my dog off, I had notified the front desk that my dog is EXTREMELY anxious. She is a shelter dog and unfortunately she comes with a lot of trauma because of it. When I went to drop her off, I was only taking my dog to get her regular shots and for a check up. I had also mentioned to the front desk that I would like to speak to the doctor about getting something for her anxiety - (something she can take everyday…) and I mentioned that she had a lump on her chest that I also wanted the doctor to take a look at and get an opinion on. (Which I told them exactly where in her chest to find the lump)The only other thing I was concerned about was her nails - which the front desk told me I didn’t need to worry about since they clip all the dogs nails during their visit…… I come back to pick her up and when it’s time to meet with the doctor, all he had to tell me was how stressed and anxious my dog was during her visit and that she “kept screaming and crying”…. Mind you, this is a VETS office, which they could of SEDATED my dog a bit to make her more comfortable, especially being that I gave them a lovey heads up about her anxiety, BEFORE HER VISIT.. The doctor said he was able to give her all her shots and said she was overall a healthy pup, which I’m grateful for! When it came down to asking the doctor about her lump, he insisted he didn’t find one on her…. And when I asked about her nails being clipped, he said that they were able to get the job done, which again, I felt relieved and happy. Especially being that she was also getting sent home with anxiety medication. It was my mistake because before leaving the vets office, I should have checked my dog….. I get home and I’m checking her… after over a 700$ vet bill later…. And her nails are extremely long, the same way I dropped her off AND I can clearly feel the lump on her chest…. Which the doctor told me he didn’t find it!!! (Which I’m no professional but didn’t take me much to find it…) I called the office and spoke with someone at the front named Maddie, and I was actually calling to see if I can speak to a doctor or Vet Tech there, to see if they can tell me how much of her anxiety meds I can give her, that would relax her enough for when I take her to the groomers (for her nails)…Well, Maddie was not the nicest and didn’t even seem to care about my questions or concerns.. so that’s when I asked her if I can speak to their manager because this should have been done in the first place when I took my dog there! (Which I still have not gotten a call back…) So what it looks like to me, these people don’t give a f*ck about your animal and just want your money… cause I still have not gotten a call back from “her manager” about my dog…. Be careful where you take your animals. I’m tempted to ask for the video tape they took during my dogs visit to see if they even gave her all the shots she needed… cause they made sure to take all the money they needed. WATCH OUT.

The staff is excellent! Laid back but passionate knowledgeable. Dr Drew is great with both our labs, always patient, kind and gives great advice. I wish he was human Dr also! I think our dogs might like him better than us? Definitely loyal to Skylark.

Very compassionate, knowledgeable and professional. Gave us some hope where we didn't have any. Rex is doing a lot better, but still has a long road ahead. We would definitely recommend Skylark for anything for pet needs.
