How to Save Money at Billiar Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We urgently needed to find an avian vet. Our options were very limited, so we expanded our search and must have called about 10 vet offices. We spoke with Andrea, who was so very helpful. She was able to get us in on the same day. We had to drive almost 2 hours to get there. We didn't have to wait too long to be seen. Their waiting room is full of beautiful animal prints. Their internal offices and waiting rooms are also full of amazing animal prints. Andrea was super helpful and pleasant. Peggy was also very polite and courteous. Great attitude and professional customer service. Sophia got us settled in the exam room and we did not have to wait long. The waiting room and exam room were very clean. Dr. Billiar was amazing. She took her time to do a thorough examination. She even got down on the floor with our bird to try to figure out the issue.... we though she was egg bound but after some x-rays, she had a broken leg. Wow- it was great to get a definite diagnosis. Dr. Billiar and her technicians were super helpful in providing information and showing us how to administer the medicines. Doc gave our bird a shot of calcium. We went home with liquid calcium and anti-inflammatory/pain meds. We were so very grateful that they were able to squeeze us in. If we lived in the area, we'd definitely use them as our vet for all our animals. If you're looking for a nice compassionate vet with helpful friendly staff, look no further. There is plenty of parking out front. Their offices are nice and clean and their staff is awesome. Dr. Billiar and her staff really know how to take care of your pet and make you feel at ease.

Our first time here and it was a great experience. Vet staff is friendly and professional. The office and lobby area were very artsy and colorful. Decorated for the holiday. Wait times were okay, maybe waited 5mins at most. The vet was very knowledgeable and calm. We do have a very skiddish large dog (pitbull) due to a bad experience at the previous vet. Since then both our dog and our family is very selective where we bring our dogs to and this vet passed the test. They allowed me to go back to the treatment area with them to help sustain my dog for some routine bloodwork. I was very grateful I was able to be present, it did take 2 vet techs and the vet with a lot of treats but we were able to do it without sedating him. Which was excellent since we have an elderly dog. I found the pricing to be reasonable and within means. Heartguard was pricier here than in other places. The vet was very timely with the results of his bloodwork and urine sample along with answering alll of my questions and advice on how to best help his dental care and diet. I would recommend this vet.

Over 20 yrs. ago, I needed a versatile veterinarian due to the kinds of animals we own. I am a Master Falconer, and have owned many raptors over the decades. Dr. Suzanne was recommended and the rest is history! Hawks or owls...any bird for that matter, she's got you covered. Yes, we have an exotic goose too, and a Ringneck Parakeet. A pet pig, semi-wild raccoon regular, and yes, a 130 pound bloodhound ! Dr.Billiar is our choice! Support her new facility ! Thank you...

My dog was declining,I went from VET to VET from Citrus County to Gainsville. Only two Vets saved my dog. One in Spring Hill and the other was Dr. Billiar. She worked with me to stabilize my dog and he is now much better. We did a series of bloodwork and xrays and we are still going one by one to find out exactly what is causing his multiple symptoms but he is getting better that is for sure. She never gives up. Dr. Billiar is a fighter and together we make a good team. Instead of saying "I don't know" and doing nothing, she keeps persevering to find the solution. She is a gentle, caring woman and takes great pride in her work.Thank God I found her after taking my dog 12x to various places over a course of 10 months. Highly recommend her.

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Billiar and her wonderful team! It’s not easy finding a vet who truly understands exotic pets, but she absolutely does. She takes her time during every visit, explains things clearly, and you can tell she really cares about each animal’s comfort and health. Peggy, the vet tech, is incredible as well — kind, patient, and so gentle with the animals. Together, they make every appointment calm and positive. The clinic is spotless, organized, and filled with caring professionals who genuinely love what they do. Highly recommend Billiar Animal Hospital to anyone who wants compassionate, expert care for their pets!
