How to Save Money at Toledo Blade Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very rude staff and they don't like if you ask ANY questions; they just want you to say yes for everything as they ring up a $1000+ bill. We wanted to get a second opinion from another vet so we requested they transfer our records so they could have all the information needed to do so and the next time we requested to pick up prescription dog food we were told we are no longer welcomed back. I'm they get plenty of business and could care less if they lose a couple clients here and there but like most vets down here they are money hungry and play on peoples emotions. RESPONSE: we have spent over $500 in lab work just this year and paid for prescription dog food and quoted $1500 for dental work and then told we can not use the same lab work and they would have to re run all of it. That is not budget friendly. Plus you guys have vet techs call and the message gets relayed wrong instead of having the vet take time out of there day to call and make sure it’s correct. We will make sure Chloe gets the care she needs but it will not be with you and clearly y’all don’t even know her anyway after 3 years nor correctly keep track of what we have spent. PS: whenever we asked questions we got nothing but attitude like it was an inconvenience and shut down. Hopefully other people take there business elsewhere because that’s the only way your practice will change.

We've been taking our dogs here for 8 years and the staff is friendly and very helpful. Dr. Minnick is very knowledgeable and cures, and remedies any issues we have with our 4 dogs. It's a great place to take your pets!

I had used this veterinary service for years. After Dr Minnich's very rude response when I asked what he had treated my cat for, I requested any future visits with his assistant at that time. Wouldn't you think that I wouldn't have to ask what he treated my cat for? Unfortunately, that thought did not occur to me until after I left the office. When his assistant failed to show up 40 minutes after my 9 AM scheduled follow-up appointment, i left. I was not advised about any delay, I was just left to wait in my little room. I recently discovered that I owed a $35 fee for this no show. I have never received a statement and this happened almost a year ago. I will make this payment under duress to protect my excellent credit rating. This is my response to a charge of $35. I hope the money was well spent.

I was referred to this Vet by a dear friend. I am so happy with Toledo Blade Animal Clinic, WOW ! The most caring Loving Staff I ever have had in my entire life. My animals are completely spoiled to the core, Yet the staff at this place spoils them even further, They care for your pet as if they owned it. Always follow up phone calls after your visit to check up on your animal, the Vet, I've forgotten her name Yet she is simply amazing, very confident, always offers solutions and her personal advice, instead of going after your wallet because they actually care about you as a customer and greatly care for your animals. I personally THANK YOU to the entire staff at Toledo Blade Animal Clinic, You guys are the BEST
