How to Save Money at Animal Clinic of New Smyrna

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Cox and his staff are AMAZING!!! He has been our vet for a lot of years!!! He loves what he does and that has always reflected in the care and well being of all of our animals throughout the years. Love Ya' Bunches!!! 🥰

They did a very great job with my cat. I brought him in for an emergency. They brought him straight in. Medication and he's doing great! He has high blood pressure. I just want to add this because he lost his sight from this. So please have your pet checked. It's very fatal in cats which was new to me.

My mother used Dr. Cox for many, many years and was so very happy with him. I originally called when I found my kittens, at approximately 3 weeks old, and tried to get an appointment, only to be told that they were booked months out and that I should look elsewhere, which I did. I thought I would try again when my kittens were about 10 months old wanting to get set up, as a new patient, for their annual check ups. I was told that I needed to wait and call back about two months prior to the anniversary of their original rabies vaccination (July 2021), because they would be due for their next round of shots, so I set a reminder to call again in May. When I called at the beginning of May I was told that they were not accepting new patients because of summer coming, vacations and the like. I tried to explain that I wanted an appointment several months down the road, but was still not allowed to make a future appointment. They don't need or want my business, I'm done trying.

Office staff, Sharon and Shelly, are very friendly and caring. They were able to fit me in at the last minute. Dr. Cox was very attentive as I explained my dog’s issues. He prescribed the proper meds which relieved some of his issues and I was charged a very fair price as a new patient. Will definitely going back. Thank you

I moved to the area about 6 months ago. I needed to find a new vet for my 3 dogs, but I’m very particular because one of my dogs has anxiety issues around people he doesn’t know (he’s a rescue with a long story) I decided on Dr. Cox because after reading his professional profile, education, client reviews and his experience, I thought he would be able to provide me with what I need as a dog mom, and provide my dogs what they need. —Good choice! The staff there are friendly, efficient, knowledgeable and caring. Dr. Cox is an amazing Vet. He came into the exam room and my dog immediately had a panic attack. Dr. Cox knew exactly how to handle him without any help from me, he already knew what we were there for (a lump) and spotted it from across the room. Within a few minutes he had my dogs confidence and was able to take my dog to another room for further examination. He returned and gave me a full review, in easy to understand terminology, without elaborate treatment options or creating unnecessary fear. I really felt he cared about my dog, and I think my dog felt the same.... the dog knows. ***** 5 stars
