How to Save Money at Yao Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Yao and his team are compassionate, patient, and extremely helpful. I brought my senior dog in after a disconcertingly mediocre visit with his original primary vet office in an acute emergency. Dr. Yao and his staff were prepared and very intent on the details of my dog's acute episode, and Dr. Yao was confident his condition was neurological. His staff wasted no time connecting me to a well-regarded neurologist and gave them details in advance of my visit. Dr. Yao spoke with me directly after the neurology appointment, demonstrating attention to detail and a dedication to patient care. I cannot recommend him and his staff more highly.

I love my dog and wanted the best for her health. She was suffering from periodontal disease and had a big infection in her mouth and gums...i researched many vets in miami and found dr.yao to have great reviews. I took my chances, and I am so happy and grateful of my decision to choose him. He is an amazing Dr who has expertise, professionalism a passionate love for animals. His staff are also amazing and they guaranteed me that everything was going to be ok :) My little Mota went through surgery perfectly fine and had some tooth extractions done. She is no longer in pain and is very happy!! They have great prices aswell!! Thank you Yao animal hospital for your love and care for my mota. You guys are awesome!!

I have a silly dog and a senior dog that are frequent flyers to Dr Yao’s office. The extensive waits in the car while their office still does not allow anyone inside have been exhaustive each visit. Even something simple can take 45 min-1 hour. Picking up prescriptions is a 15-30 minutes thing, I simply don’t have this kind of time to waste and I’m really getting tired of it! If you arrive on time you’re waiting a long time until they come take your pet and even longer to do billing and checkout after the exam. I hope the inside office opens back up soon so I can properly advocate for my dogs and also have a better administrative experience. If I’m spending thousands of dollars here annually I would at least like to accompany my dog to their visit and speak in person to the Dr. While I’ve never met Dr Yao after all these visits, the phone calls have been pleasant. He doesn’t push for extra treatments.

Updated: Unfortunately I have changed my rating. I know everyone is busy and we have to adapt to new circumstances. But more than ones I called to ask questions or follow up on a specific case and the reply was email the Dr. I email various times and never got a reply. So we decided to change Vet. Old Review. First time coming to the Vet for Yoga Vom Bustos. Due to coronavirus we had to wait outside. The assistant were super friendly and explained to me the steps and how the process was going to work. When Dr Yao called me he was super friendly and explained to me next steps for my pup and was interested in the dog. Felt like part of the family.

I have never met a vet and a staff so loving and dedicated to the welfare of animals. This hospital is by my office but very far from my home yet after bringing Dr. Yao a stray I found and seeing the care and love he and his staff put into caring for her, I now travel from Hollywood to Miami just to bring my other 4 dogs to him as well. Love this place. I kept both the stray and the Vet I found that day. That day was a great one in my book.
