How to Save Money at Paws and Claws Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. De Armas and his staff are remarkable! My 14 year old Yorkie was in so much pain and I thought I was going to have to say goodbye to her 😢 I called the office early in the morning and they received her right away. Dr. De Armas knew immediately just by seeing her walk a few steps that she was having an arthritis crisis and he put her on a plan immediately. She was under his care for 2 days and is now back home thriving and pain free. She will have to continue with her medications for some time but his knowledge and quick care saved her, saving me the devastation of having to see her in pain. I highly recommend Dr. De Armas and will continue to take all of my pets to him as he sees all pets from A to Z! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone at Paws and Claws! They are top care and professionals!

Absolutely one of the best Bunny/ rabbit savvy vet in S. Florida. My sweet Oliver had a random abscess appear which grew quickly. Dr. De Armas gave me options and ultimately had to have surgery. It was a scary situation but I had faith in him and his staff and Oli has made a fully recovery. Bunnies are not cheap but he is still with us and that’s all that matters. In addition, I also have to thank the clinic for caring for our other pet Blue, Russian blue cat, who had odd raw rashes and with treatment has been back to his regular self. Highly recommend Paws and Claws for your pets but especially for your rabbits.

How do I explain… Pets are more than a simple possession, they are spirits, just like we are. Our little Henry provides more for us, than we could ever offer him in exchange for his captivity and presence in our lives. But we try with everything we have to provide him the happiest most comfortable life we can. So when we needed to find a vet for his surgeries, with Henry being a little dwarf Holland lop rabbit, we knew it wouldn’t be easy. But we had to do everything we could to find the absolute best care for him that we could afford. Many vets simply don’t possess the licensing and knowledge to take care of rabbits medically, and if they do, they lack what is necessary to instill a feeling of confidence, and sense of their humanity when it comes to handling pets and their owners. He was originally supposed to go to another vet for this surgery, but something inside me on that fateful morning just stopped me, right before we were scheduled to take him in. It just didn’t feel right. After a close call with making the wrong choice, I decided it was best to look again and I ended up researching “Best rabbit vet in Florida” Henry’s life weighed in the balance so we were willing to do whatever was necessary. We were so relieved to find Dr. Armas among the top in the state of Florida, and as a consolation for us, it didn’t mean an overnight trip. Did I feel bad for cancelling on the other vet? Well, in the grand scheme of things, to them, it is a business. But for Henry, it meant the difference between his life or death and I absolutely, unapologetically made the right choice! I will never take Henry anywhere else. The treatment we received from Dr. Armas and all of his staff was unparalleled from anything I have ever experienced. You can tell I’m a fussy pet owner, and I believe they cared every bit as much for Henry’s well-being and existence as we do. It’s three days since his surgery now, and while he is still recovering after such an uncertain and scary time for him, he is doing super well considering, We’ll never be able to repay Dr. Armas and his staff for their kindness, care, patience and handling of our little fluffy Henry, other than to share the fact that because of him and everyone at Paws and Claws, we can continue having Henry in our lives another day.

Took my 2 turtles with a really bad eye infection, they hadn’t opened their eyes and had not been eating in 2 weeks. I called several places and thank God Stephanie the receptionist gave me an appointment immediately. 3 days after being treated by Dr. Ramon De Armas they started to eat and 5 days later they have started to open their eyes with the medications he put them one. Jessica the nurse that gives them their treatments has been amazing, the entire staff has demonstrated to care for my Babies 🐢🐢 Thank you All, from Donatella & Baby
