How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have to say the midtown location dont staff has always been kind to us and our fur baby. Unfortunately he fell ill. And the staff was very empathetic towards us and the situation. He passed away there...and the kindly assisted in options burial althought they were closing they stayed open just so we can come to a solution. But on a way much happier note the service was always handled with care ❤️ no complaints on my end and new pet will definitely come here as well

My dog has been an ear infection for a few weeks. I have been to Banfield maybe 4 times for the same problem. Unfortunately he didn’t let me touch his ear so despite buying all meds and calming pills nothing worked. So I brought him for the 4 th time to let the vet do it, he had to go through sedation :/ At the end of the appointment the invoice was +$100 ( not initially supposed to be) it happened that the ear infection got worst than the week before. We also had to wait a full week to have an appointment available for sedation … so not that surprising! As I came plenty of times for the same problem, as I also did for allergy ( I am a really good customer 😅) I asked to talked with the manager to know if it would be possible to waive a single fee or to have a payment plan. She called me and didn’t want to know anything. She just said “ THE BILL WILL STAY THE SAME” she didn’t want to know anything and she was mean. Not a sorry, nothing. God bless I can pay otherwise my dog would stay in pain or die even if I already spent a lot of money, thousands in just a few months. I won’t renew my plan there.

Midtown location* It defeats the purpose to have appointments if staff is not available!! Didn't even had the opportunity to check in!! I followed protocol, scheduled apt for today at 11:30, confirmed online and verbally. Called while in traffic and asked if I was going to be seem or not, front desk tried to help but the veterinarians were not willing to help expedite the check in process. I asked to help to carry my dog in and nothing. Not even a star they deserve unfriendly staff, non-available, uncooperative, wrong expectations of service.

Don’t get the wellness plan!! Because you prepay they will make you wait 4-7 hours even when you have an apt! some people had been there for 8 hours! The 1.5 stars they have on Yelp make a lot of sense now. I don’t recommend this location to anyone. I took my dog for her scheduled appointment for rabies vaccine they told me it was an hour at the most and that they have to keep her in the back which is very weird usually I go in with my dog and see the doctor. Anyways, 5 hours later they still haven’t called me so I went to see what’s going on they wouldn’t let me see her and insisted on keeping her in the cage. At this point I wanted my dog back so after a lot of back and forth they gave her to me; she was so dehydrated her eyes looked like she was about to pass out from being in a cage without water for 5 hours probably panicking. i am taking her to the er as I’m typing this. Big thanks to Jenn the office manager for causing all day and yelling at us if you see the lady in the picture just run she’s is a horrible Human and should not be allowed To be around pets. Banfield needs bro be held accountable for their employees actions the way she was acting I wouldn’t trust her with my dog. I had an apt at 1 pm and this happened close to 5 pm. She was yelling at me saying normal wait time is 4-6 hours I waa very confused why is it an appointment then? she was obviously in a bad mood and started yelling and threatened to call the cops when I asked why the delay and why didn’t they give my dog water why do they need to keep a dog in a cage for 5-6 hours none of this makes sense save yourself the heartache and go to VCA or any other pet hospital

The worst Banfield experience in over 8 years avoid this one in Midtown. Dr Taylor sounds like he's 15 years old and can't make a cohesive sentence. He speaks over you when you're explaining what previously happened and says he's not the person to speak to and says the more you speak the less time he as to treat the dog. Absolutely disgusting behavior by a doctor. I was explaining how I was paying the most expensive plan how it took them over two weeks to approve a prescription because the doctor was on vacation so no one was looking at the faxes and he kept saying that's not going to resolve anything. Completely indifferent of the hundreds of dollars I had paid literally less than 3 weeks ago to get this resolved which they didn't resolve the problem was only exasperated and now have to pay hundreds of dollars more to fix. AVOID AVOID AVOID THIS BANFIELD LOCATION IF YOU CARE FOR YOUR PET!! Been a member for over 8 years and this is the worse experience. These people just want your money with no care! I can see now why they have the one star rating!
