How to Save Money at Marathon Veterinary Hospital, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We were on vacation in Marathon when our beautiful girl, Kimber, jumped in the canal on day one and scraped all four paws on the sea wall. By Monday, her feet were swollen and she could barely walk. Dr. Whipple, the vet tech, and the staff at Marathon were amazing! They treated her like their own and even called to check on her a couple of days later to see how she was doing. It's nice to know there is a place close by to our vacation spot that treats out-of-town fur babies so special. We would highly recommend this animal clinic.

Ever since the Care corporation took over Marathon Veterinary Hospital care and Service has plummeted. From what originally was a Homey neighborhood clinic where employees knew clients by name and animals by temperament, who would meet a sick client after hours when needed, and where I was willing to pay a higher fee for visits because of these “family“ qualities, has become a fee mill. Treatment not absolutely needed was was constantly encouraged for very high fees while annual vaccinations for my two dogs were well over a thousand dollars. The last straw was when my 21 year old cat, who has been going to this vet for 21 years, was very sick while I was out of town. Staff there told my pet-sitter to take my cat to Cudjoe key, a 30 mile drive. The other Veterinary Hospital in the area agreed to see her although they had never had her as a patient and were able to do what was needed to keep her on her wobbly feet. I really liked my vet at Marathon Animal Hospital and I have always enjoyed the office staff, but those are not good enough reasons to keep bringing my pets there.

We couldn't be more thankful to the Marathon Veterinary Hospital staff for the excellent care our little Lacie received during our recent trip to Marathon, Florida. Lacie had a horrendous pancreatitis flair up that, quite honestly, my husband and I didn't think she'd survive. From the first call we made to set up an appointment, until the time we left Marathon (a week later) Lacie received top notch care, and my husband and I received the assurance that she'd be ok. If we hadn't know better, we'd have thought we were at our hometown veterinary hospital in Maryland. Dr. Whipple and her staff communicated with our hometown veterinary hospital to ensure our almost 16 year old "baby girl" received the BEST care for the BEST outcome possible. Thank you, Marathon Veterinary Hospital from the bottom of our hearts!

Just phenomenal. Our dog had an issue while we were vacationing in the Keys. We walked in on a Saturday morning and were seen almost immediately. The front office staff was so compassionate and kind and the vet tech and vet treated our little guy like he was their own. They explained everything clearly and answered all of our questions. We would definitely use this office if we lived closer. Plus, they could have could have charged us exorbitantly because we werent regular patients but the bill was very reasonable actually a lot lower than even our regular vet.

From the moment your call is answered, you’re taken care of. Melissa and Jessica are absolutely amazing people at the front desk. They got my sick pet in immediately. Jessica went over and beyond for me and Melissa was so kind when we walked in, even came over to personally say hello to my pet. Dr Lindsay was thorough and very informative. The phone all to check on Murphy a few days later sealed it for me, that this is where you should take your pets if you want the best for them. Kind, caring and accommodating. Thank you everyone.
