How to Save Money at Animal Health Center of Port St Lucie

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Super kind and quick to my puppers since moving to the area. My mini schnauzer had an accident the week prior and had a drainage tube placed right before our move where we lived prior (go figure) but most of the staff and doctor handled it quickly and so kindly. They didn’t seem to try and oversell or charge us on anything unnecessary which is a bonus. It’s a bit hard to find on G-Maps as it takes you to a house behind towards a dead end which caused us to be very late so hoping that gets fixed soon but other than that my boys are happy and healthy which makes this dog mom happy :)

I’ve really waited to place this review because I wanted to push through. I’m really done with this Vet. I’ve been going here for years. Vets have changed and they are not kind at all. Somehow every time I visit I leave feeling like a failure with my dogs. The vet’s that work here do a good job of making you feel small and uneducated. Instead of providing encouragement, feedback and guidance, they actually speak to you like they are the owner of your own dog. If you don’t spend that astronomical invoice they put together for you then you’re treated as if you shouldn’t even own your dog. I thought this was just me but my family also brings their dogs here and when I told them how I felt they absolutely agreed that they experienced the same thing. They are going somewhere else too. I’ll take my money and my dogs elsewhere.

New to the area and made an appointment to have our 9 year old Portuguese Water Dog seen for a small fatty mass on his side. They were able to take him in the next day. The front desk team was very nice. The vet tech dis the check in and explained that he may need a lot of tests. I explained that we have had a similar situation and I’d prefer to have him seen before adding services. They said he had to be seen in the back, not in the exam room we were in and that I could not go with him. I asked why and said I was not comfortable. She said that’s how they do it. My usually happy, friendly, timid Portie was hiding behind me, shaking. That’s never happened even at new places. The experience was already uncomfortable. The tech left and came back with another tech. They asked me to help hold our guy so they could draw blood. She took a catsup sized bottle of alcohol with a tube on it and sprayed his whole leg with it. She then began poking him repeatedly and “could not find” his veins. She was moving the. Weekend around in his leg and he was clearly in pain. No luck and she had the other tech try. Same thing. Alcohol bath and repeated jabbing, gripping and twisting his leg and pulling the skin around while digging for veins. They said “this happens sometimes” but in all of the decades of vet visits this has never happened. At that point I told them I’m not comfortable with his care and we were going to go back to our usual vet in Vero. The staffing crisis is real but when you are dealing with the wellness of a loved one, never compromise. I see why they have next day appointments when everyone else is booked out for weeks.
