How to Save Money at Shelton Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Edit: The hospital Manager is extremely professional and contacted me regarding my review. I do have positives to say. The antibiotic has greatly helped my cat. The reception staff is very good. And they will make it right to the best of the ability if there is a problem with the visit. I was impressed that this was handled so quickly and with care by those running this facility. It makes a difference. Thank you for your kindness regarding this situation. I have edited the original review to just the facts and no longer emotions. As well as have said above my gratitude and thank you for reaching out. The vet tech was very rude at first and didn't have the experience to handle cats at all. The appointment time was 915 am I left there just before noon. Was told about other people's emergency losses and was in tears for most of the visit. I was also horrified to find out that they questioned any good decision they recommended to me as if I wasn't going to do what was best for my cat. The clients are very nice. Again the clientele here are just amazing people. Shelton does attract good clients and I will continue to consider then for my cats care after this contact to fix. 💖

My family and myself has been using this vet for over 20 years. They are very good, caring, and fair. I have never once had a negative experience with them. They have given my pets excellent treatment, and on more than one occasion they have saved my pet’s lives. If you are looking for a vet, pick Shelton’s!

Shelton vet was my preferred place to take my pets. They’d always been kind and caring and their prices were reasonable. About three months ago my precious 14 year old kitty got sick and would not eat. They prescribed him an antibiotic with side effects that discouraged eating. It was so essential that he get back to eating because they did blood work and his kidney values weren’t good. Additionally I asked for some flea medication and I was not warned that I should not have my cat on the antibiotic and the flea treatment. In part I recognize I should have asked but I also feel I should’ve been advised not to give both. I gave him both at the same time. A week later he was still not eating and had almost lost a full pound so I brought him back to the vet and explained my concerns. They gave me morphine. This would knock him out and leave him extremely groggy. He could barely stand when he took that. In short the issue wasn’t being addressed. I don’t know if perhaps the office knew my baby was dying and didn’t have the heart to tell me but I would’ve preferred they told me. I would’ve done what I could to make sure he passed away before things kept turning for the worst. Instead I held on to hope cruelly. He only got skinnier and a few days later his paws had gone cold and he was unable to stand at all on his own. He craved hiding places close to us and one night woke me up yowling from the pain of his internal organs shutting down. I had saved some of the morphine and gave him a dose. His confusion calmed down and his pain did too. He fought so hard to live. My kitty passed away November 27 2021. Three months later I was in need to get my bunny to eat. He had GI stasis and Shelton had previously taken care of him before. They’d give him a massage and some IV fluids and pain medications and he’d be fine the next day. I called to bring him in but this time they refused me service and told me I needed to go to an exotics veterinarian. Didn’t give any explanation as to why.

My goats are my babies. One ripped it's hind leg tendon. They were able to see it back together and saved Tips leg. This year one of my Does went into labor. She was having hard times. The vets and assistants not only saved Gin, but her twin boys. The Twins.

First time visit last week with my dog. She is extremely shy/timid/skiddish but the staff was wonderful with her and very patient. I will definitely continue to come here and can't say enough how awesome they made our first visit.
