How to Save Money at Hillsboro Beach Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I actually haven’t been to THIS vet office, however, Dr. Tomasko operated on my dog almost 3 years ago and quite literally saved her life. She is compassionate, brilliant, and kind-hearted and I am forever indebted to her for saving my girl’s life! I cannot recommend her enough- her poise, passion and care made those few days relatively bearable to me. She is the best of the best.

I am beside myself. I called to request a different prescription but was told that the doctor needed to see my little man. I agreed to blood work and was told it would be about 368 on the phone. I went to the appointment with my dog in good, cheery spirits. I agreed to the blood work and also asked for chest X-rays bc after speaking to the doctor, it may be that he was misdiagnosed and was taking seizure medicine when he should’ve been taking heart medicine. I ended up paying almost 600 for blood work and another 300 something for X-ray, the bill was about 932. My poor guy left there in good health but started heart failure hours later and died the next morning. I had called a little after 8 AM asking for the doctor to call me but she was not in until 9. I ended up showing up with my deceased dog around 9:30 AM which she and the nurse were both shocked. I had to pay another $175 to have him cremated. There were no courtesies extended for the money paid. His blood work was good, his X-ray showed no indicative signs of heart failure or disease, no clue into what happened. I am heart broken. I feel mislead, I feel I paid a small fortune and lost my dog within a 12-15 hour experience. They did not offer to work with me on the expenses. The speech the day prior was morbid and like an impending doom was starting and I needed to accept he lived a full life, which I did but he was cleared in good health that afternoon but only to die a few short hours later. They were kind when I arrived back with my deceased dog but the experience was traumatizing and I question if I had him in the best medical hands.

Dr. Munoz and Alex were very professional, knowledgeable, patient, answered every question and did not rush us. Gave our Tikki a thorough examination explained everything and Gave us printed handouts on Tikki’s issues. I felt very comfortable with them and they took excellent care of our senior dog. I would recommend them to everyone in need of a fantastic vet. Thank you Dr Munoz and Alex.

Dr. Loss is truly amazing and she cares so much. She truly is passionate in her career and I always ask for her to be my dogs vet. But on a business standpoint, the clinic as a whole keeps pushing me to spay my dog every single time I’m in there. Mind you she’s just 5 months old and a German Shepherd who will develop well into her first year of age. I know it’s not all on the physicians but their structure period, and they push so many products on you that you can get for a fraction of the price online. I have to tell them to just do what’s on the “puppy package” because if I don’t, what should be just a simple sound of vaccines becomes a $150 dollar bill every time. *Oh the puppy package doesn’t cover nail trimmings. It’s about $30 every visit.*
