How to Save Money at Shelton Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

0 STARS- DO NOT WASTE YOUR AND YOUR PETS TIME!! Brought my dog in MARCH to get a lump examined on her stomach. Doctor says its a tumor and we need to biopsy and remove it. We scheduled her surgery for April, was okay because we knew there was about a month wait for surgeries. Vet assured us she would be okay to wait a month. Unfortunately my dog went into heat, and we were told we needed to push back a month to avoid any complications that may arise. I originally trusted this information and agreed because they are professionals in the field (or so I thought) and know what is best for my dog. ONE DAY BEFORE her rescheduled surgery we get a call to confirm details, and when we tell them we waited a month post heat cycle- they then tell us we have to push it back ANOTHER MONTH. I was told I have to wait 2 MONTHS post heat cycle to have surgery, different information from was I was told before. Keep in mind, the tumor has DOUBLED in size. I sent pictures to the vet, and the response was to keep an eye on it, the tumor shouldn't get any bigger, but we still need to wait a month to avoid medical complications. We wait again till June now- trusting the "professionals". The week of her 3rd rescheduled surgery, I receive a call from the office. I am now told due to "unforeseen circumstances", there is a new doctor and that doctor wants to do a quick visit to meet and get up to date on my dogs case. The visit was set for today, 6/13/2023, her surgery was scheduled on 6/15/2023. At the appointment today I am told that they can no longer do the surgery because the tumor is too big. Obviously I get upset and cry because I'm completely confused. Come to find out, the original doctor who was to perform my dogs surgery was gone longer than I was told and the office has been behind on surgeries. So instead of being truthful and telling us that they are behind on surgeries, my dog is now unable to get the surgery she has been waiting to get for 3 months. In that time I could have scheduled with a new vet office and my dog would not be in the position she is in now. Shelton Vet Clinic obviously does not care about you or your pets. I feel taken advantage of, and now my dog is suffering for the negligence. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR PETS HEALTH AND WELLNESS!!!!!

As I am new to the area I was in need of a Vet, not only for the care of my service pup but also boarding when I needed to have a medical procedure performed. Since I have had my pup we have only been apart for no more than 8 hours and both of us were stressed of the upcoming separation. When we arrived, we were treated by Taylor, a Vet Tech who was very compassionate of our situation. Taylor reassured me he would be fine and well taken care of. To my surprise no less then a few hours later I received pics of Roscoe to see how he us and was adjusting to the separation, along with a update on how he was doing. Well evidently he was having the time if his life. i In fact he was hoping around the yard when brought out. Keep in mind for 115 pound dog to bounce is quite a feat! When I was able to pick him up Tayor again happened to be our tech . I received a full brief on his stay and was again throughly impressed with the detail she went into. Lastly I would like to thank Samantha who in the rain went out and tried to find a card I misplaced (turned out it was in the Truck) as it was nasty out.their is on tech Vicki, who deserves a big thank you, as Roscoe wanted to play with the cats at the clinic on the way out to me and when told no, peed on the floor.Vicki Again Thank You. Honestly All I can say, if you lived in the vicinity of Shelton's I highly recommend having your pet ( no matter type) be taken here foyr all your pets needs and services, I know Roscoe will go nowhere else from NOW ON.
