How to Save Money at Forrest Avenue Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff is great. I love Dr. Henry. He is so very kind, caring and compassionate! I never had a vet take the time to make my sweet boy, Pippin feel at ease. Thank you

Forrest Avenue Animal Hospital took good care of my cat. Dr Henry and his team of professionals put together a plan that would give my cat the best remaining part of his life. They took very good care of my cat. They are a group of professionals and it shows from the moment you step into their new building. They even made your visit easier with a "cat" door or a "dog" door! Update: 07/17/2023 My cat requires constant care from them every 2 weeks. They always take good care of him and let me know of any ongoing health issues since he has lymphoma and is not expected to live long. The doctors even call me at home to check in on him. Who does that anymore?

Dr. Gaines and the staff at FAAH were wonderful as always! My rat Cricket needed a minor surgery and i was very impressed with how i was given updates before, during, and after the surgery. I had also mentioned to one of the techs that i had an older rat who was about to pass away, and this afternoon i received a call to ask how she was. It was a very thoughtful gesture :).

I met Dr. Kimberly Gaines when we had to bring a rescue to the Delmarva Animal Hospital, (she was there covering for a doctor that had to call out, left her full day shift of work from forest avenue and helped out at the animal ER directly after). She was amazing, helped explain everything in great detail and kept us fur baby parents from panicking. Later we had to have an amputation on that rescue animal and her office made every effort to squeeze us in and find an opening as soon as possible. All of the staff was so nice and reassuring in my animals care. I will gladly recommend them to anyone as they give a real family atmosphere to you and your fur babies.

After moving to southern Delaware, we had not yet chosen a new veterinarian for our pets when in December 2022 our beloved daschund mix puppy, Ruby, became suddenly and seriously ill. After calling many local vets and being told none were accepting new patients we were relieved when Forrest Ave Animal Hospital in Dover agreed to work her into their schedule. Though our story does not have a happy ending, (we had to let her go January 31st), we came to the right place to receive the best veterinary care for which we could have asked. Dr. Henry was enormously kind, compassionate and committed to finding the source of her illness. He was exceptionally thorough and researched everything he could to save her life. We so appreciated the follow up calls the day following our visits to check on her status. We were challenging puppy parents and wanted to know everything that was going on. Dr. Henry and his team were patient and professional every step of the way. When it was time today good bye to Ruby, we could not have been treated more sensitively by Dr. Henry and staff. There was complete understanding of how heartbreaking this was for us and they provided an abundance of time and support as we went through the process of having her euthanized. Later we received a heart warming card expressing their condolences at our loss. Dr. Henry has become our favorite veterinarian ever for his incredible diagnostic skills as well as his deep sensitivity to the animals and owners in his care. We simply can't recommend him enough. Thank you to Dr. Henry and the entire staff for their loving care. Joan Bender and Jeff Faulkner
