How to Save Money at Barnum Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

NEGLIGENCE! HORRENDOUS experience!! Our rabbit was spayed here and dead within 48 hours. We took our rabbit in on a Friday to be spayed when we went to pick her up late Saturday staff said "she hasn't eaten overnight" and anyone with rabbits knows this is a cause for concern. Despite our concern they told us to take her home, "rabbits can be sensitive to anesthesia" feed her critical care and the appetite restore (which we did nonstop with no improvement) and they told us "to call back on Sunday morning if she hadn't improved." She died in my arms on the way to (a different) Emergency Vet on Sunday morning because she wasn't OK and our concerns were valid. At my consult prior to surgery, I was told they were "on the lookout for GI stasis after surgery and would not fail to treat it if it was a concern." But apparently not because they did nothing for out rabbit besides tell us to take her home. I called first thing the next business day and asked to speak to the veterinarian who performed the surgery, the staff reassured me they would make it right and I would received a phone call back that day. HEARD NOTHING until I called the answering service again and then finally a phone call with the most lack-luster apology I have ever received in my life. Little to no remorse and I am in the medical field... So almost $600 spent in clinic costs, a dead rabbit ...and not even the courtesy of a timely returned phone call, a heartfelt apology or staff owning up to utter grotesque negligence. There is absolutely nothing to recommend.

The Gooble Gobbler

My Cat Shadow died this morning. I originally was bringing him in to get the shot. But Dr. Wong took one look at him and said that he was going on his own. Dr. Wong brought in the bottle but just stood there and talked with us in full explanation about what was happening and was very compassionate. Before Long Shadow went peacefully. I'm am not the biggest fan of Doctors anymore because they try to get every last dime from people but not Barnum Animal! They could have hurried up and gave him the shot but Dr. Wong...All I can say is thank you for being a REAL Dr.! You are Dr. Pieper are the best!

Dr. Pieper is hands down, the absolute best veterinarian you could ever have see and care for your pet. He is truly gifted and genuinely loves animals. Whenever I leave messages with questions, he always gives me a call back the same day and has always provided well informed responses that make me feel at ease. He can be brutally honest, he’s got spunk and a fun sense of humor and I personally enjoy that very much about him. He does not take advantage financially and his prices have always been lower than anywhere else for the same treatment. He is the gem and I am so grateful that I found him 15+ years ago to care for my pets. When he retires, I genuinely don’t know what I’m going to do. There is no one else out there like him who checks off all the boxes - rare talent, extreme knowledge, genuine and visible love of animals and fair/low prices. Thank you Dr. Pieper for all the love and care you have provided to us and so many families!
