How to Save Money at Evolution Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They were great. Our dog was hit by a car and they got him right in and assessed. Luckily he’s going to be okay. Staff was supportive and the vet was super thorough and sweet. Cost was on lower end of estimate which is good.

Our dog unfortunately had his first (and hopefully last) run-in with a porcupine late Friday night while we were in the mountains. Evolution was the closest emergency vet at 90 minutes away; not only did they help calm us down over the phone and give us tips on how to safely get him in the car, they saw us right away when we arrived and had Buster sedated and cleaned up within 2 hours. We did end up having to go back for a follow-up on Sunday afternoon for a couple of problematic retained quills in his ankle. The wait then was quite a bit longer (~2 hours), but that was understandable since it wasn't a true emergency. We found the estimates to be very reasonable and the staff was great about giving us updates. They also let us keep our other dog with us the whole time, which we really appreciated since we were all stressed! We hope to never have to go back (at least not anytime soon!) but we would happily trust EVS with our pets' care in the future.

We just moved down the street from this ER a couple of years ago - and we are very thankful that we have a 24 hour ER vet so close to us - and we've had to come here on multiple occasions in the past year alone for our two cats. I recently brought in my sweet girl, Sophie, over the holiday break and we unfortunately had to make the difficult decision to put her down, but the staff, vet, techs, and everyone we came across were nothing but compassionate and kind while I was an emotional mess -- and I can't thank them enough for being so supportive and kind during a difficult time.

I came in here with my dog after driving from the high country in the middle of the night. My dog came in with a toxicity cardiac emergency after ingesting human medication accidentally while I was at work at a human ER. Being in the medical field myself - I knew likely what was happening but not what to do. This lack of control when I’m normally able to help someone put my emotions in chaos. The staff at this facility was top notch. From the moment I first called at home to let them know I’d have to make the long drive to them because we don’t have an overnight ER for animals in the high country until I took her home - every worker was compassionate, kind, patient, informed, informative and educated. As I lost my emotions, they were wonderful in saving my puppy. I can’t thank these human hero’s enough. Not only did you save my puppy but said the kindest things at the perfect moment. She’s doing much better now and I have so much gratitude. Looking back at the situation, I know it’s YOUR values, ethics, knowledge and team that helped me process through all of it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Everyone I know and work with in the high country that has a dog has heard about you from me and you are the only recommendation I make for anyone that needs to come downhill for after hours care! Here’s clover fully back to herself enjoying a day in the sun up in summit county!

Amazing!! We started off with VCA Highlands Ranch and things started too take a bad turn; we had to find a new surgeon for our 5lb Mini Schnauzer's liver shunt. From the first call, to the day we picked her up, the staff were incredible. Dr. O'Donnell is wonderful, kind, and assuring. We felt confident leaving our tiny doggy in his hands. He explained everything in a calm, precise manner and we never felt like we were an imposition with our questions or the time he took with us. We know our puppy got so much love from the staff and we weren't scared leaving her for three days post op, beyond the normal fear for her health and recovery. The staff went out of their way to accommodate our visits with our girl, and always with a friendly smile. Thank you to: Gwen, Alexis, Kristin, Sydney, Kari, Dr Cassie, Dr O'Donnell and anyone else who loved and cuddled our Orla Blü and helped to save her life 🩵
