How to Save Money at Alameda Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

LOVE all the vets and techs at Alameda Veterinary Clinic. They are always looking to keep my baby healthy while recommending the most cost effective ways of doing so. They treat my dog as if they were treating their own furry family members. They even rein me in when I consider advanced testing that is expensive and really isn’t necessary. Couldn’t ask for better vets.

I've been going to this vet for a couple of years now and I absolutely love them I will not go anywhere else. My pets mean the world to me as I feel everyone can relate to and the people that work here really care about animals and it shows. Doctor Howard is so helpful, engaged and personable. I think he should be a national treasure. Photos of my kitties included 😊

I really, really wanted to like Alameda Vet Clinic, as the staff is generally pleasant and it’s close to my house. I gave them multiple chances, but after my recent experiences I now have no other choice but to seek care for my dog elsewhere. As far as annual check-ups go, I never had any issues. But when other problems began to arise with her, I was truly able to see how incompetent and apathetic the staff at this office truly is. My dog is suffering from some health issues (she’s asymptomatic, but her blood tests are coming back abnormal) and we can’t figure out exactly what’s going on. Some of the potential causes are highly concerning and life-threatening. I had numerous blood tests done by this office, and never heard back on results without me pursuing them. I assumed everything was all good after the initial follow up test — no news is good news, right? Wrong. My dog’s blood test once again came back abnormal and Dr. Howard and his staff didn’t even bother to call me. I had to call THREE times before I ever heard back on results, and nearly two days later he finally called me to discuss them. He had a very careless attitude, telling me he would try to look into it, but he was leaving for a 4-day weekend and didn’t really have the time. Additionally, it was clear he had no idea what a possible cause could be (I literally had to inform him of what I found in my own research online). The one positive here is that he did take the time to consult an outside forum and an internal specialist to get a bit more information about recommendations. I proceeded with more testing based on these recommendations. Again, they did not bother to call me back with test results. I called once a day for one whole week and I was told “we don’t have them yet, we’ll leave a note for the staff to call as soon as we do.” Finally, I called on Monday, August 8th and was emailed the results. The report said they had last been updated July 31st, EIGHT days earlier!!!! Then, I was told Monday that Dr. Howard was out and that I would for sure hear Tuesday. I didn’t. I am worried sick about what’s going on with my sweet girl and Dr. Howard and his staff could not care less. If you’re just taking your pet for an annual exam, there’s nothing wrong with Alameda Vet Clinic. However, if your pet is sick or showing signs of other issues, I’d avoid this place at all costs. Find somewhere with a compassionate staff that genuinely values the health of your pet, because from what I can see, this place isn’t it.

They did not tell us it was an extra $48 to drop my dog off in the morning for her xray appointment (so could take her before work). If I knew that I would have just taken off work and dropped her off for her appointment only. I thought they were being accomodating. I guess they treated it as a boarding fee? Don’t offer this option or be more upfront and tell me it costs extra. They didn’t tell me until I picked her up at the end of the day and it was an extra $48.
