How to Save Money at Humane Colorado, formerly the Dumb Friends League - Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is a wonderful place! The people that work or volunteer are amazing. This is a very difficult job you see such sadness a lot of the time. The joy when a forgotten animal gets a new forever home makes up for the sadness. They have state of the art facilities that offer so much to the public. There are two operating rooms, one to do dental work on cats or dogs. The other for spay or neuter for dogs or cats, as well as other surgeries, that you're welcome to watch! I've watched them grow and it's a joy to see what they do and to know it's growing all the time! These people are Heroes! Save an animal from being alone, they will adore you forever. Thank you for your time

Horrible experience, was told my sweet 6 year old Golden “might have cancer”, I was called back within 24 hours and told she did not and that their lab machine was off, went back for scheduled surgical consult, then told she did have cancer and, “it was bad”. A ton of prescriptions thrown at her that made her miserable, I was judged for being selective about which drugs I wanted to give her and I know what meds were making her miserable with urinary retention, and diarrhea. Then got a call from the Vet accusing me of trying to get a “controlled substance” filled with a prescription I was given for an antibiotic, Took the prescription to King Soopers, who told me they didn’t have the Vet in their system? Took the same prescription to CVS and got the antibiotic no problem. The roller coaster ride has been pure hell, imagine why I don’t trust what they say? They can’t even agree on a cancer diagnosis on my 6 year old Golden baby. I’m going to take her 2 hours away to her regular Vet who has loved her for 6 years, was just far away from where I live now. I Would not recommend you use this place, unless you want to be on this roller coaster of emotions like me, and being judged for doing what you think is best for your fur baby. Gross incompetence and lack of caring. What I choose to treat her with is working well with managing her symptoms and pain. Again, getting a third opinion with a Vet I trust, crying inconsolably is getting old, but getting treated this way makes it worse.

I came here expecting discounted vet services. The initial visit was on $45. Im on DNAP and Medicade... and needed discounted services. Unfortunately.. The costs of everything here is the same everywhere in Denver. I was told it was going to $190 for an xray and a UA. They did not send in the UA. I only did the Xray. And would not remove the extra costs from the bill. I was told they wanted to treat the bladder stones with a prescription diet. But they didn't give me the prescription. I had to return and ask multiple times for the prescription. Not a discount..more like a bait and switch service. DO NOT COME HERE UNLESS YOU HAVR NO OTHER CHOICE. *** Response to your Comments. Dear Vet Hospital Staff. I had to come back and ask for my prescriptions twice. Your staff did not provide me with prescriptions. - even though I was told, in my appointment, that they would. I had to pay, leave, and review your documents in my car; then I had to come back and ask for my prescriptions twice for the dog food. The first prescription that was provided to me when I asked, listed a wet dog food that didn't even exist. The second one was only provided to me when I pointed out the first dog didn't exist. I stand by my thoughts and opinions of my experience at your clinic. This place is horrible... and I would NEVER RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.

My FurBaby Luthor recently got a toe amputation here at the Dumb Friends League Pet Hospital. They took care of him as if he was their own. We were so blessed to have had an amazing medical staff. Thank you!

I cannot thank the team at the Dumb Friends League Veterinary Hospital enough for the incredible care they gave my dachshund, Daisy, during her recent dental procedure. From the moment we arrived, we felt reassured by their kindness and professionalism. Daisy needed dental extractions, and the compassion and attention she received throughout the process meant the world to us. The care they provided was not only exceptional but also affordable—far more reasonable than other places we explored. But what truly stood out was how deeply they cared. The day after Daisy’s procedure, a nurse called to check in and answer all our questions, making sure we felt supported every step of the way. We are so grateful for their thoughtful and dedicated service. Daisy received the best possible care, and we can’t express how much we appreciate their efforts to make this experience as smooth and stress-free as possible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for treating Daisy like your own!
