How to Save Money at Mountain Shadows Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've been bringing my pets here for over 5 years. Recently my dog was seen in the ER and I called to make a follow up appointment with vet for surgery. I left a voicemail and they called back to tell me they legally had to wait for ER to send over paperwork before they could even make an appointment to discuss surgery. I called the next day to follow up after the ER confirmed they sent the records, left another voicemail, and have never heard back since (over a week ago). I've been skeptical about continuing to come here since Dr. Wilson left but now that my calls are going unanswered regarding my dog needing somewhat urgent surgery, I will be looking for a new vet for my pets.

they are cheap for a reason. I brought my dogs in less than two months ago for a yearly wellness exam. They didn't look at their teeth because that isn't part of the WELLNESS exam....? Now they want me to pay for another visit to have them do what they should have the first time. The wellness exam consisted of them taking the temperature, listening to their hearts, and checking their lymph nodes. That is why they want you out of the room. The woman I spoke to, of course had no idea what I was talking about and insisted on my paying for another exam. I asked her to look me up, she asked for what dog. I told her both of them and said their names. She tells me there is a note saying the doctor looked at their teeth. I told her he didn't. She then says "We don't open the mouth up. We just take a peak." I tell her the teeth I'm referring to are in the back. She tells me I'll have to pay for another exam. I told her I should pay another almost $80 for something that should have been done the first time? "The exam is $37." I have two dogs. She then tells me I said it was for a specific dog. I told her no and that she asked and I told her it was both dogs. Either way, it doesn't matter. Why should I have to pay for something you didn't do. "Well, we did do it." You just said that you don't open their mouths. The tooth I'm talking about is in the back. I ask to speak to the doctor and she hung up.

The staff and doctors at mountain shadows have been great with my girl. She has had a few recent health issues but everyone there make her comfortable and not stressed. I've had bad vets and I can say that these folks are amazing. I have no doubt about their capability and trust their decisions. After all, my dog is my family and I want the best care for her the same way I would want the best for my human family. Would I return and would I recommend? Yes and absolutely yes!

THEY DON'T ANSWER THEIR PHONE AND THEY DON'T CALL BACK! And the email address on their website doesn't work. I edited my previous five star review to one. We had been to this clinic a few times with some of our animals and they were fine. But recently one of my dogs got a clogged nose. I called the office four times over the course of a week, left very detailed messages, and no one ever returned my call. I got GHOSTED by this vet clinic. I ended up taking my dog to the ER.
