How to Save Money at Blue Spruce Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Great doctors, great medical staff, and great front desk staff. I've been going to Blue Spruce for around five years, and have never considered switching. It's an easy location to get in and out, a clean lobby, and clean exam rooms. I highly recommend Blue Spruce as a reliable, considerate, and affordable veterinarian.

Sadly, I had to let my 17 yr old dog go last week. I don't have a vet here yet, so I called so many places, including three vets that come to your home (they have gone up in cost, ran $500, $650, $785!) I settled on Blue Spruce Animal Clinic, and I am so grateful now for that choice! Everyone there was so kind and sympathetic, and they made it the most peaceful experience possible. I was able to stay with Riley the whole time, and after his exam and catheter insertion , we were taken to a private room to sit on a loveseat together. There was a soothing fountain, and a jar of treats to spoil him with to the very end. I was given a remote to push when I was ready for the vet to come in, and afterwards, too. There was no hurrying, I could sit with him as long as needed. Dr. Onuma was very comforting and compassionate, assuring me that I was making the right choice for Riley . As difficult as this day was, the people at Blue Spruce really helped me to get through it. And, price-wise, it was the best, too- $260 which includes Riley's ashes and paw print.

Every single person who works there is absolutely fantastic, compassionate, and clearly cares about the work they do. My dog needed a TPLO surgery and, frankly, I could not be happier with how my dog was treated and how the surgery went. The communication and price were excellent. I'm so thankful I found this fantastic team to take care of my pup!

I'm new to Colorado. I've had dogs for over 45 years. I have never had a place to take my dogs as nice as Blue Spruce. From the front office personnel to the outstanding doctor, Dr. Serene Onuma. My beagle was attacked by four coyotes on a Sunday. My Labrador brought her back home. They took us in with a dog that couldn't move or be touched, she was 75% dead. They made us feel real comfortable and I can't mention the amount of care they put out. They had to stitch her on both sides and clean a lot of other wounds. We were sure our dog would not make it through the night, instead she is doing great. When I returned Tuesday to have her tubes removed everyone was in shock that she was still alive. Dr. Onuma was very understanding and did an outstanding job on not sell us any more services than what was absolutely necessary. I've tried to recommend them to our friends. Only problem with that is that they are already using Blue Spruce. I'm not a big fan of cats but, they are the cat's meow. Thank you to the Blue Spruce team for bringing my dog back to life.
