How to Save Money at VCA Northpointe Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place has absolutely zero compassion for pets. Our sweet dog of 14 years was on her last leg today and suffering. We called this poor excuse for a veterinarian hospital to bring her in. When we arrived, the vet tech or secretary at the front desk was completely useless. Not only did she not consider the comfort of our family member a priority, but she insinuated our dog was completely fine. Our beloved dog passed an hour later. This place is a disgrace!

My family had been going here for YEARS and when my dog needed to come in for an urgent visit, they were going to make us wait TWO WEEKS for an appointment. It was for something that definitely couldn’t wait two weeks because she was in pain. We stopped going here and started going to another vet that actually cares about the well-being of our pets and they got us in same day. It must be new management that came in and changed everything. Why try to fix something that’s not broken? Disappointing.

I waited till today to post this to see if I was still annoyed about my last visit. Yeah still annoyed. Facts, I didn't have an appt, my dog wasn't an emergency case, we got to the vet office before 9am and I paid for 98% of his care in advance and didn't leave till damn near 4pm. VCA you make the DMV look like they know what they are doing. I rather go to DMV then waste my day at this vet office. We were there for 7 hours!! They had other real emergencies that caused us to have to wait longer, from what they said. Just because my dog isnt an emergency doesnt mean i should be forced to sit there for hours and being told 15 more minutes. Do you know what 15 minutes really is? Well after sitting in the back room for over an hour waiting for the estimate to be provided, I decided to go ask how much longer, for the 2nd time. Why was all of the office staff hanging out in front talking having a good time while we waited for the estimate. So were the other "emergencies" really the problem?Unacceptable! Why are you making my old dog sit in a hard kennel? Did you take him pee or did you make him hold it?! Why are you making my 5 month old puppy sit in your office for 7 hours waiting for my other dog! Why did you waste my entire day! 7 hours! I don't live in town! This service was the worst I've had at this office. Like, come on Dutch Bros is way faster then them and see 100% more people. Yall need to get it together! If this is personal, then say something! Me and my dogs have never done anything to deserve this treatment. It seems like since Covid no one has any hustle! No pride in their work or just don't care. The other patience in the office are your fake excuse to waste me and my dogs time. You had enough people on staff to get the estimate done quicker, among other things that day.

While saying good morning to Athena I noticed a huge welt/mass under her eye that wasn’t there before we went to bed. Fearing it was an allergic reaction or something in her eye, she needed urgent care. My normal vet was short staffed and couldn’t get her in so I went to VCA Northpointe Animal Hospital. They were so attentive, caring, and friendly. Despite having an hour half- two hour wait, they provide triage care and gave us an exam room to wait in so that we weren’t stuck in my car or in the waiting room with a bunch of other pets. Our bill was under $250- which included a week supply of medicine!! Athena can be anxious when getting medical care, especially if I can’t be present, but the staff were obviously great and wholesome because Athena did just fine when they took her back to see the doctor without me, and all the staff loved her. Athena is 140lbs, so the fact that they could handle her so well and independently shows their level of skill set. She came out tail wagging and after an exam the the vet was luckily able to determine that there was nothing lodged in her eye and that she wouldn’t require additional treatment or tests. I feel so appreciative of the team there. And grateful that for emergency care, the bill was less than my vet would have been for normal care. Highly highly recommend!!
