How to Save Money at Jefferson Park Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've been using Jefferson Park Vet for 3 years now for my 3 year old dog and my 8 month puppy. They get the job done but there are a few reasons they don't get 5 stars . The first is the vet said my at the time 3 month puppy was rude and not well behaved and was more judgemental more than encouraging of working on these behaviors. The second reason is the receptionist Tina I spoke with on the phone was very rude to me on the phone when I asked questions about previous estimate I received there and she told me it expired and would have to get a new spay estimate. I asked if I could know what it was previously and she told me the estimate was gone. She wouldn't let me speak without cutting me off and overall she was not very helpful and very rude. I was able to set the spay appointment and then asked if she can get chipped as well and she told me I can ask when I come for my appointment. I'm not sure if Tina was having a rough day but I definitely didn't deserve for her to take it out on me with the attitude and rudeness. The next reason is regarding my experience with using Care Credit at this office. I had an appointment for my puppy and when it was time to pick up I got the bill and paid through the app because I did not have my card and do not live close by to go get it. Given the receptionist was newer it isn't totally his fault, but I feel like someone in the office should have had some information on using Care Credit account. The problem I had was I paid through the app but the receptionist said they did not receive it. I showed them the confirmation on the app which was not good enough. I then called Care Credit customer service and they confirmed it went through as well and recommended the Vet call to confirm themself. Which they did and still told me they cannot confirm it. They basically held my dog hostage for almost 2 hours then the receptionist finally called and said that they had confirmation and they said didn't log into the Care Credit account to check. I was very upset. The final reason may not be such a big deal because I'm not sure how the process was before COVID, but I don't like that I have never been able to walk into the office. It makes me nervous leaving my dog anywhere let alone in a place I can't even see for such a long time.

Dr. Mandel at Jefferson Park Veterinary Clinic cares about your pets health and well being... She was willing to get our chihuahua Gabby in for dental surgery with-in 10-days removing 3-teeth after our regular vet declined treatment due to Gabby's age of 16 (they recommended a dental specialist which required waiting 6-weeks for a basic exam and then another month for a surgery date). She has also called and texted several times to check up on her progress and given further recommendations for her care in the past 3-days. I have know Dr. Mandel for over 25-years and I can't recommend her and her staff enough...a place you can trust to have your pets best interest at heart. PS: the procedure was also fairly priced vs. other quotes we received.

Dr Mandell and staff, at Jefferson Park have went above and beyond in caring for my animals. I was looking for a new vet, after seeing one that, at best, was disinterested in addressing any of the concerns I had for my pets. I was nervous about trying a new vet, but am so glad I did. If you are looking for a vet that is fully invested in the well being of your animal, then you should try Jefferson Park. Dr Mandell addresses my concerns and actually takes the time to explain things to me, so I understand exactly what and why we are doing something. I appreciate the care I receive here, as well as the care my pets receive- from all of the staff.

Disclaimer : 4.5 because it is very pricey. Dr Mendell basically brought my cat back to life! My Maggie had a severe vitamin deficiency that had caused her brain lesions. Dr. Mendel listened to what I had to say and didn't disregard me. She was able to turn around pretty quickly and now Maggs is more lively than she has ever been! I would recommend Dr Mendel and Jefferson Park Veterinary to anybody!!
