How to Save Money at Mendocino Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had my first visit at the Mendocino animal hospital yesterday for an appointment I made a couple weeks prior for my cat Kiko to have her updated on vaccines and spayed. All the staff are very nice and friendly. They updated me very quickly when Kiko woke up from her spay and let me know she did good. I picked her up at 3:30pm and was told she did very well and there were no concerns after her spay. Vet technician provided me with detailed instructions for Kikos discharge and offered for me to call if I have any concerns at all. Brought Kiko home and she’s been doing wonderful. She acts just like herself and you wouldn’t even know she just had surgery the day before. Overall this was a positive experience for both my cat Kiko and myself. I will continue brining my animals here and so far I recommend the Mendocino animal hospital as a good and professional vet clinic. The pricing is also very reasonable compared to other vets.

They try their best to keep the cost down. Very in depth instructions on how to care for your pet. Check up calls ✔️ friendly and understanding. I live over an hour away from this business and I'd travel any day for their expertise!

Took my pup for a foxtail removal. My dog was so smitten with the polite young vet tech, he didn't even notice I left. When I picked him up, he was still happily trotting along with the dr. It's obvious he felt safe and taken care of, and that was most important for me.

First I want to say that our veterinarian Burns is excellent and the care is always been great, I wouldn’t take my dog anywhere else. So for most everything I would give 5 stars, I put this review under compassion for the vet tech that turned us away tonight before 6pm. I take care of two elderly parents as well as two teenagers and two dogs, I tried to get there sooner but made it before 6. She was fairly condescending even though I just needed to pick up antibiotics and rinse for my dogs ear infection. Wouldn’t let me pick it up so now he has to suffer through the night without it. She rolled her eyes at us through the window of the door as she locked. My daughter and I were made to feel as if we were asking too much being there before closing business hours. Didn’t mean to inconvenience anyone but they should probably change posted hours to 5:45 pm closed as that was around the time we arrived to pick it up. Hopefully she got home as early as she wanted to considering my dog will suffer because this was apparently more important to her. 2/14/23

During a heartbreaking time, Mendocino Animal Hospital came through for me. I needed urgent end of life care for my senior dog that was very ill and they were able to see me the same day unlike so many places I tried or my regular vet. Veterinary Doctor Bethany Powers was compassionate, caring, understanding, and really helped me through the process. The whole staff was extremely caring and helpful and I am so glad I brought my sweet baby here. I highly recommend these folks for any veterinary services. I will def be bringing my other doggo here from now on.
