How to Save Money at Tehachapi Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is a popular location, so expect a long wait (1-2 hours until a nurse takes triage). They take walk ins for vaccines and urgent care. I dropped my pet in the morning and waited until late in the afternoon, but when I finally heard from the vet he was highly considerate and helpful in navigating the treatment options, as well as honest and clinical about my pet's condition. If they expanded their staff to help the line move faster I would give them 5 stars.

Super busy -- they weren't kidding when they warned me on the phone that the place usually fills up by 10:00 a.m. It looked like they weren't going to be able to squeeze in our boy and his sudden problem, but they did. The reception staff (special shout out to Chelsea) is very kind and warm, and exceptionally thorough. I'm not at all happy about having to do a drop-off -- that is, leave our boy at the desk instead of being able to go into the examination room and actually get to meet the vet and talk with them for a few minutes (as was once the norm here) -- but I guess that's now the trade-off for excellent care. And the care is indeed excellent.

Tehachapi Veterinary Hospital has been our vet for over 10 years and have consistently provided first class care for all our furry friends past and present. A week ago my pooch BJ was moving slow and would not eat. I was aware of how long it took to get an appointment as numerous other pet clinics closed due to covid. Drop off was my only option. The next morning I took BJ over there at 7:40 thinking I would beat the rush as they open at 8:00. I did not. There were at least 15 people with their pets already waiting for the doors to open to do a drop off. Once the doors opened the receptionist gave us all clipboards with drop off forms. After I returned mine BJ and I went to sit on the bench outside the door. The waiting room was standing room only. A short while later a vet aid came out asked me to amplify my written remarks and took BJ in. I went home and about 2 hours later they called me and informed that BJ had pain in his neck and asked if I would authorize x-rays which of course I did. I was asked to call them back in 2 hours which I did. They then informed me that his neck and spine x-rays proved negative. I was immensely relieved as BJ had had a previous back injury that I had to take him to VCA in LA on THV's recommendation. Thankfully the spine specialist there called me the next day and told me BJ did not require surgery. TVH called me back an hour after their initial call and said I could pick him up at 2 PM which I did. We went home with his meds and instructions to restrict his movements for 2 weeks. It's been a little over a week and BJ is his old self again. My heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the entire staff at TVH for their compassionate care and professionalism. I have seen reviews chastising TVH because of their fees. The old adage rings true, you get what you pay for and with TVH you get the best!
