How to Save Money at Humphrey Giacopuzzi & Associates Equine Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Soooo grateful for this hospital in our area. 🙏🏻 My mare was dealing with some pre-existing health issues and came in for a few days after a severe spider bite. Knowing her history they were amazing being open minded and also searching for alternative therapies. I recently had a clients horse come in for colic and a found loop around the small intestine. Our vet called it in and they were on it. A whole team came in and they worked amazingly quick. I was very impressed with there process and professionalism.

I don't often leave reviews, but really felt one was in order here. Dr. Zoe Davidson was out for my beloved retired TB about a month ago for a pretty bad colic, and she was smart, capable and nice. Then unfortunately she came out to euthanize my sweet boy a couple days ago, after 21 years with my boy (he was 34), this was one of the hardest days of my life, but Dr. Zoe was so kind, compassionate and made it go smoothly. If I ever get another horse, I'd love to have her as my vet.

We sent a client's horse for surgery here and had a great experience. Multiple parties involved and very logistically challenging scenario - I am beyond impressed with the office staff and surgeon, who were all exceptional in terms of communicating with me for scheduling, billing, and making sure the horse had a comfortable, seamless experience. Procedure was priced well and we received an honest itemized estimate ahead of time. Excellent work by the surgeon, who took the time to call after the procedure with updates! Five stars. Happy to know there is such an exceptional surgery center so close to our Thousand Oaks training facility. Thank you HG&A for making my job as easy as possible, and for doing such exceptional work on my clients' horses. We look forward to working with you again.

Everyone here is absolutely wonderful. Trailered my horse in for an emergency and Dr. Fallon saw her and she was wonderful!! I didn't think my horse was going to have a good outcome given her condition and 4 days later my horse is doing so well. I'm so thankful for her and her team.

It's never easy to make the decision to let go of a beloved animal friend. We were out of options with our beautiful mare Autumn - the field vet coming to our house was out of diagnostic options. A friend recommended we trailer her to Giacopuzzi's facility in Somis to get an X-ray. Every interaction with the staff - the wonderful front desk staff, the helpful technicians, and Dr. Haig herself - helped us understand exactly what was going on with our dear girl, and what our best options were. She had a large stone in a very bad spot, and given the location of the stone, her age, and her temperament, we decided the best course was to put her down. The staff handled every moment with complete kindness and transparency - that's really what we needed in order to make such a big decision. They helped us every step of the way, gave us as much time as we needed to say goodbye, gave her a very yummy last meal, and let us stay with her after she passed to help her spirit along. Really top-notch care for both animal and humans. And through all of our tears and inability to even speak, I hope they know how much each of them was appreciated on that day. We just couldn't have made the decision - or had peace with it - without them. Thank you so, so much.
