How to Save Money at Santee Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

It's a family business, run by two vets that are brothers, and their mother, Stella, who is the main receptionist and assistant, but also has experience in the (human) health industry as a dentist. My partner has been taking our oldest cat there for the past 8 years or so. I met Dr. Mark last week, and it was very nice to see how careful and thorough he was with our 18-year-old kitty. He kept her history with previous notes at hand, checking it when necessary, and comparing current and past exams results. He explained everything, answered all our questions, and didn't rush the appointment. It's clear to me how intelligent and caring he is. I also appreciated how he presented the bill, explaining carefully each item, and giving us options regarding extra exams of what would be more or less necessary. Stella, his mother, is definitely a people person and a joy to meet. She's super sweet and makes sure that we felt comfortable while we were waiting for the appointment with Dr. Mark. She's also very organized and competent, and even helped us by calling the Urgent Care facility which we took the cat before to ask for more information. I just won't give them 5 stars because Dr. Mark is not a holistic vet, not does he recommends raw diets, which are things that are important to me, but I know it is totally a matter of preference of the pet owner. If you're looking for a "traditional" vet, I truly recommend them.

Very helpful, took the time to look at my dog as a walk in. Very honest took the time to make sure I understood what's going on with my dog. Didn't push extra service for my dog at my expense. My visit wasn't wham bam thankyou man, now go pay, I like them. Keith

Very kind people working here, excellent care. They listened to all my concerns and helped me to the best of their ability. The vet himself took the time to go over every little detail with me when it came to my cat who was sick, she eventually got better 🙂

I had a great experience here. Both the front desk and vet were very caring, loving and compassionate to me and my cat. They took their time teaching me so many things to do at home and tips on how to do them best. They gave excellent care to my cat and checked back later to make sure she was improving. I very much appreciate the waiting room procedure utilizing park and call to ensure that there isn't a stressful waiting room full of animals which I believe helped greatly with my skittish cat. I will continue coming here gladly.

Today I tried to park in the handicap spot in front of Santee Pet Hospital. I was greeted by the owner of the business who was already outside with one of her customers. She started out by telling me I can’t park there and she decided it would be a brilliant idea to stand in front of my vehicle and demand I park across the parking lot in a different spot even after showed her my placard. I told her many times I have a placard for a reason and the spot was designated for those who needed it. She continued to belittle me and tell me I don’t look handicap. Shouting out I should be at work and I am disrespectful for not moving where she tells me to move. She then called the police. During this time one of her (I’m assuming) employees came out and told her I could park there but she didn’t listen to him. After about 15 minutes of waiting the sheriffs department show up. They inform her that it is public parking and I in fact can park in the handicap parking spot with my placard that I had clearly displayed. She was argumentative with the deputy but eventually gave up and went inside. No apology was given. After dealing with the owner I’m not surprised their yelp has 3 stars and google has 4 stars. I’d stay away from this business and think twice about bringing my pets here.
