How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

You have to remember, you "are" going to an Emergency Vet Hospital . It will be more expensive, than just going to your regular vet. With that being said, this is my 1st choice, for an emergency. Over the last 25 years, with 6 different animals, ( dogs, cats, African Grey parrot) I have brought my beloved pets here, in emergency situations. The staff and doctors are awesome. They've always been sympathetic, yet straight forward with me. They are very aware they have your fur baby, back there with them, and in their care. They talk to them and try to reassure and comfort them. Then when time, will come out with updates when possible. 4 out of the 6 times, I've had to go there, they saved my babies life. The 2 times it wasn't meant to be, no matter how hard they attempted to save them, they treated me with great compassion and care. Never rushed me saying goodbye to my babies. Let me take whatever time I needed. This last visit was for my 14 year old dauschund who had a mini stroke. When we bough him i we really throght we would be saying goodbye to him. I'm very glad to inform you, almost 8 hours later, we were able to take him home. We weren't out of the woods yet, but they had him stabilized. The next 72 hours were very crucial to his survival. I'm even happier to tell you all... It's now been 85 hours later, and he's still with us. Tomorrow morning, we go to his regular vet, for follow up. I am Very thankful for all staff and doctors who work there. Eileen Binley --Santee, CA

Banfield was amazing. We came from Animal Care Clinic because they were too busy to give us quality care. But Banfield had appointments that fit my schedule and they took such great care of my boy Quincy. They found things that the other vet missed and they took their time which I did not mind at all. I have 2 other dogs that will be transferring over to Banfield too. Give them a try for sure!!

The biggest gamble you roll with this location is whether or not it will be open (1 or 2 days a week). The service used to be amazing. Today, it was implied I was lying about my 14-year-old female being a long-term patient (3 surgeries and 12+ years of preventive care later). They haven't seen her in over a year. Yeah, no kidding. Any emergency care has to go elsewhere when they tell you they're booked for the next 9 weeks. I guess I'll have to drive to take care of my dogs.

I actually went to the Groomers I would never hesitate to going back again. They are an awesome group of employees that you can tell they really enjoy what they do and are so gentle with your little fur baby. Highly recommend them.
