How to Save Money at Holistic Animal Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

One is too many stars... My dogs needs a specialized diet. When I made the appointment I specifically asked and verified that they could handle my dogs needs. I called back a week before the appointment to confirm. When I got the there the dr rudely informed me that she doesn't do meal plans and then proceeded to tell me that she can examine my dogs energy and see if there are supplements for his food but she didn't do any of that. she took his temp and the appointment was over. I was out $80 and they did absolutely nothing. Plus I waited over a month for the appointment and drove over 2 hours to get there.

I highly recommend them to everyone I know with a pet. You have to believe in holistic remedies and put serious effort into the solutions for the treatments to really work. After going to damn near every vet clinic in Petaluma I was able to get a dermatology apt at the VCA, who diagnosed my dog as having an autoimmune disease. It took about 8 months and a lot changing medicines and doses before they had her setup with 2 types that produced stable results at a wopping $240 month for the rest of her life. After reading about the side affects of the medicines, I decided to do some research on alternative remedies and came across holistic animal care in santa rosa. Once I commit to bringing my dog to the clinic, the Dr overload me with information about protecting myself my family and my animals against all sorts of toxic products including EMF's & VOC's. At first I was skeptical about the method she uses to test my dog, but after only a couple of months of serious effort to reduce toxicity around the house, raw organic food and the right supplements, I noticed a huge difference in her energy levels and skin condition for the better. It's now been about 8 months and my one dog has now been able to ditch the more toxic medicine altogether and reduced the dose for the other medicine. The Dr is really nice once you get to know her and has good prices on her remedies and supplements. The Dr often has suggestions on where to buy the supplements in bulk to help reduce the cost and is always really friendly with my dogs and I

Working with Dr Chalmers has transformed the lives of my companion critters. They're far healthier and happier now. What I've learned has changed how i care for my animals, home and self. I'm far healthier now too! Dr. Chalmers invites her patients' humans to look at their environments in a new way. She shows us how profoundly effective it is to eliminate toxins and improve diets! My home, yard and diet has changed too as a result of observing the profound alterations in my beloved critters. As with all learning, there are challenges. Surmounting them is nothing short of transformative.

I highly recommend this place! Backstory: My otherwise very healthy cat had a chronic ear infection. I took him to a very expensive "holistic" vet near me (that's how they market themselves but are pretty conventional, turns out) and all they offered to help was antibiotic ear drops. I tried them and the ear infection got worse. So they moved onto antibiotic drops/steroids. I kept asking, WHY is he having this ear infection. They said, oh it could be a variety of things but there is no way to know. I asked them if there were natural options such as collodial silver or apple cider vinegar to try, and they said only antibiotics would work. I was scared so did another round of the drops and another.,...Finally after months of this my cat was hating me due to getting held down and having drops put in his ear twice daily and his ear infection was worse than ever and my vet bills were through the roof for it (luckily insurance kicked in but we are talking it was in the 1,000s and I would have been screwed if not for pet insurance). Anyways, I brought him back to the vet, yet again, and this time they offered to inject a potent and long lasting antibiotic gel into his ear. I was over it. I'm largely against antibiotics, that's why I was at a freaking "holistic" vet! Desperately, I looked for other options and found Holistic Animal Care under a search for a homeopathic vet. I made the 3 hour (each way) drive to Santa Rosa with my cat for our 2 hour initial appointment. The vet took her time, was gentle and calm and easily figured out my cat's allergies and imbalances through muscle testing. Even though I am very open minded and have used muscle testing myself..I was still a bit skeptical. After all, the previous vet had said the infection would ONLY be helped by antibiotics. Anyways, I put my cat on the protocol of supplements and diet recommended and within days he was doing SO much better. Within weeks his ear issues disappeared. And months later he is still well with no ear issues. I will be taking all my pets to Holistic Animal Care from now on, despite the drive. It is beyond worth it to get true answers and true HEALTH care for your pets!
