How to Save Money at East San Rafael Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I live in SF and my cats Dr moved to ESRVC. Since she has seen my cat Leo thru some pretty major health concerns I wanted to keep his care managed by Dr. Nordberg. Therefore I take him to San Raphael to see his Dr. Dr Nordberg provides excellent care for Leo. He is currently in renal failure so staying on top of his bloodwork values is hugely important as well as keeping him on a renal diet and hydrated. This is a progressive disease but I feel that he is in good hands so that he gets the best care to hopefully slow the progression. She partners with me to give me direction on the steps I need to follow to address any changes in bloodwork values. I know he has a reduced lifespan but with good care I'm hoping I have him with me for a few years more

This is the best vet around. They have amazing bedside manner and they treat my dog as though he’s their own. They’ve been able to get him in last minute, they answer calls quickly, and it’s easy to set up appointments. I am so grateful for them!

They were great. The staff were great. Nice, kind and loving to every pet that came thru the doors. I wish I could remember the name of the vet, but I have the memory of a gnat. Regardless, she was great and interacted with my cat, Lenny, like he was her own. We will be going back to her and ESRVC, most definitely!

Dr. Jazmin Schneider truly went above and beyond for us. I am so grateful to have found this vet clinic and to work with Dr. Schneider going forward. We are dealing with one of our cats being very sick and our other cat being effected by the sudden change.. it was incredibly helpful to get advice on how to navigate this. Everyone else that was there was wonderful.. the other vet or vet tech we saw (unsure of her title but she was great) sat down with us, showed us how to clip our cats nails, and recommended some products. The people who checked us in were funny and kind. Everyone I had spoken to on the phone was very polite, supportive, and took time to answer questions. This is an incredibly sympathetic environment, I couldn’t recommend this clinic more. When going through either routine exams or dealing with scary news in regards to your pets health… this place is supportive, they care about your pets and you.

I've taken two of my dogs there and seen both ends of the spectrum: compassion when treating and eventually euthanizing my first one and excitement when performing a wellness check with my new puppy. When planning to say goodbye to our last dog, they were patient and understanding while we decided, and NEVER came across as cold or impatient. In fact, I could see the doctor's eyes swell with tears as my wife and I cried while we put him down. While treating our new puppy Dr Evans is absolutely fantastic with him. The best way to describe it is that it's like he's treating his own pet - how can you ask for more? I wish family doctors had that type of communication skills. I get appointments relatively promptly and have not had to wait long when arriving. My only suggestion for improvement is the clinic doesn't feel or smell as clean as other vets I've used, but in no way will that deter me from staying with them.
