How to Save Money at South Shores Pet Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I really appreciate this place. The veterinarians have always treated my cat gently and respectfully. My cat has had several issues and each time I have come here the vet has taken time and care to find out what the problem was and to treat her as best they could. This clinic also prices their services fairly--not exorbitantly marked up. I hope my cat stays healthy but next time I need to take her to the vet I will return here for sure.

I believe this to be the best vet in San Pedro. I take both my lab and cat here and have never felt like they were not taken care of. The office is nice and clean and the staff is kind and efficient. Also, I do not feel like they try to charge me for extra stuff as I have experienced at other vets

This is literally the most money hungry place I have ever seen lol. I messaged them today to get my cat groomed. They told me that he has to be seen for an exam by a vet. lmao to get a bath?????!!!!!!! Hes goes to banfield for exams so he didnt need one I was just looking for a groom and of course they dont say that on their website, they are totally bait and switch here. They also requested a rabies vaccine which some places request thats fine, but the exam is ridiculous just for a cat bath and brush. I also took my rabbit here like 8 years ago, same thing. They kept adding on services etc the whole time. I came out of there and said, wow an ear clean ended up costing me like hundreds. They couldnt confirm ear mites but made me do a cleaning and get here products anyway. And of course you can get the products without the ear cleaning! lmao Dont go here, save your money. Go somewhere else that isnt going to come up with a million extra things to charge you for. The vet was nice to my rabbit and me but this was eight years ago and the only good thing I have to say about this place!

Piper, our nine year old rescue, was staying at our parents house in Torrance while we were traveling in Spain. We got a message from a vet office in San Pedro that someone has our dog. The voicemail was from Cece at South Shores Pet Clinic telling us that they rescued Piper off of Hawthorne Blvd. Piper was running down the median when Cece first noticed her. After chasing her down, with exhaustion, Cece was able to pick her up and take her to South Shores. One could imagine the shock, guilt, and helplessness we felt when listening to Cece’s voicemail and story of how they obtained Piper. How lucky and blessed we are that Cece was the one to rescue her! Cece suggested letting South Shores Pet Clinic board Piper for the duration of our trip and we couldn’t have agreed more. The entire staff at South Shores Pet Clinic, and especially Cece, loved, babied, and comforted our Piper during this traumatic journey. As soon as we could, we went to pick up Piper, thinking she would be traumatized from the whole process, only to find her happy. Very happy! We could tell she was taken care of and loved so well that we automatically asked if we could establish Piper here at South Shores. We can never leave and we never want to leave a vet clinic like this. All pets coming here to South Shore Pet Clinic are truly cared for and loved, and we will always tell our heroic story of how this clinic saved our family.
