How to Save Money at VCA Bay Area Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Their front desk and technician staff are friendly BUT we felt like we were being milked for maximum billings and everything was customized to ensure they can process us as quickly as possible for their convenience rather than for our dog or for us. Our particular vet also had a mediocre and brusque ‘bedside’ manner and we would specifically recommend avoiding her. Shop around, you can find similar services with better care at a lower price. We discovered the premium we paid only post-surgery when we spoke to friends and found out they paid 10-30% less. We nevertheless would have been ok with the higher price if the service levels justified it.

My mom and I brought my dog in to be seen on Wednesday 10/25/23. My dog is usually unfriendly with men, but he really took a liking to William. William was so kind, caring, and patient not only with my dog, but also with my mom and I. The front desk was incredible, I couldn’t figure out how to make a tea using their coffee maker and they were kind enough to show me how to do it 3 different times. We spent about five hours here and William made sure to keep us updated on what they’d done so far with our dog and give us an estimate on how much longer til we would be able to see the Dr. This is the third vet we’ve taken our dog to with concerns of his cough, lethargy and weight gain. Dr. Legallet was able to address our concerns with our dog and we’ve already seen incredible changes. She sent him home with a cough suppressant and found out his thyroid levels were incredibly low. With the cough suppressant and thyroid medications, our dog is starting to act like himself again. We are so grateful for Dr. Legallet and William for taking such good care of our dog. We are also incredibly grateful to Ruben for recommending we come here and see Dr. Legallet. Thank you guys so much!

I brought my cat here a few months back when she got sick - not drinking, not eating, and lethargic. The front desk staff was friendly and while the wait time was long, they were upfront about it. The vet ran tests/blood work, took an x-ray to check for blockages, and gave her fluids. We were told that all of the tests were normal -- no concerns. They encouraged us to keep an eye on her eating/drinking and return if her symptoms didn't get better. After two days with no improvement, we went to a different vet. She reviewed the same test results and pointed to one that was way outside of the normal range -- almost five times the upper end -- and indicated a pretty bad infection that was missed by the staff. While I understand the staffing challenges, the long wait and missed diagnosis were concerning, especially considering the substantial cost. Attention to detail and thoroughness should be a priority, even in busy times.

This team helped me when my cat died at home and I didn't know what else to do. Philip was so kind and sat with me while the medical team processed my pet. I am so grateful they were open early, and for their compassion and kindness. I must imagine- since they showed such care for a walk-in with a deceased pet, they must also offer even more outstanding care for the living. I am so grateful and I wouldn't hesitate to come here again.

I went to VCA Veterinary after our vet of many years was not willing to help with end of life care for our elderly pet that was in very bad condition. They wanted us to wait at least three days over the weekend before they would see our pet. I called VCA, and they told me that they would see our pet right away after explaining our situation. All the staff that helped me were very understanding & compassionate. The staff helped me through a difficult time & treated me and my sick pet with respect. I am especially grateful for Philip at VCA Veterinary, who was especially helpful to me.
