How to Save Money at Vista Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We couldn’t have had a better experience at Vista. We had just come from another emergency veterinary hospital and were sent away after waiting for an hour due to too many critical animals coming in. We called ahead to come into Vista and were told our pup could be seen. In the meantime more critical animals came in and quickly overwhelmed Vista. Worried we were going to be sent away from another vet, we were advised that we would be seen but there would be a wait. Considering there were other animals in greater need, we were more then okay with that. Despite being so busy and tired, our pup received nothing but the best care from the entire staff. Thank you to everyone at Vista for treating us and our puppy so well! He’s back to normal and playing again. Your love for animals clearly shows with the amazing care you provide.

Zeus spent two nights in the ER and had numerous tests done and run. From the time Zeus arrived, to the time he left, Vista Vet treated Zeus like he was one of their own personal dogs. He received 5-Star treatment, along with lots of attention and affection, from all the vet techs and their vets. I can't say enough GREAT things about Vista Vet. They are A#1 in every way possible. Golden State German Shepherd Rescue would like to thank everyone at Vista Vet Specialists for their outstanding, wonderful, and compassionate care they provided to Zeus and to George.

In April 2023, we needed an emergency visit for our very small chiweenie. She was acting weird and we thought that she had been poisoned. It was after hours and after calling a few after hour emergency vets, we were told to give them a call. It was a great recommendation! The building was easy to find, very clean and comfortable. The staff was so sweet and even offered a blanket for our dog that was shaking uncontrollably. The vet assistant and the vet were also great. It is definitely a place that I would recommend.

My girlfriend waited 4 hours just to be seen by a doctor. Although patients are based on urgency but our cat had a "level 3" emergency according to the hospitals posters inside and had absolutely terrible communication. She was initially offered a 4000 dollar procedure with no other options until she mentioned that it would be a financial risk and was offered a different procedure that is worth 700 just to drain our cats pee. We were given morphine and another medication. She felt that we were being milked of our money. My girlfriend had already taken our cat to Vetco prior which had outstanding help for our cat and had drained his pee and had done blood and urine tests for only 200. We ended up paying 700 at Vista for hours of waiting. Vista already had known of our cats issues because Vetco sent the tests to vista. The doctor used jargon to dismiss our cats wellbeing to have us pay a higher price. My girlfriend ended up waiting 7 hours she was able to leave at 3 in the morning.

As a long-time rescuer and doggie foster mom, I have been to at least 25 vets over the years, and I was extremely impressed with Dr. Bailiff. We came in as an emergency. He took extra time to explain my dog's aggressive nasal cancer to me and actually took me in the back room to show me the scans on the computer, which I have never had a vet do. We came in for an emergency and waited less than 20 minutes to be seen. I called to ask a question and he actually emailed me back on his day off! Very happy and I only wish my dog could continue to see him but now he has to see an oncologist. Vista was also very prompt about sending me all the medical records and getting them to the outside oncologists. Thank you Vista!
