How to Save Money at Sactown Vet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I always get a little anxious and nervous with doctors and vets. My little Cooper had his first appointment today for an introduction and vaccines. Everyone in the office was so friendly, comforting, and knowledgeable. They seemed to fall in love with Cooper who also enjoyed all of the attention he got - he was treated like a celebrity! What a great experience. This is definitely my new vet clinic for all three of my cats needs going forward. Thanks again Dr. Thornton and staff for making us both feel so welcome and comfortable. I’ve already referred Cooper’s sister’s owner to you guys as well! You’ll be seeing her soon I’m sure :-) Thanks again!

I had to take my old, loyal border collie rescue, Matilda to Sactown Vet to be put down. Animal lovers know the days you have put down your pets are the worst days of your life. Dr. Alexandra Thornton is the most compassionate, thorough and thoughtful vet I've ever been to. Her commitment to keeping all pets comfortable and stress-free made my worst day just a little less worse. When you take your pets here, you can be sure Dr. Thornton is more concerned about their health and happiness than the business' profits. All of my pets will now be coming to Sactown vet for their health care.

I wanted to say a huge thank you to Dr. Thornton and all of the staff for taking such good care of my puppy Archie. We came in yesterday because of ongoing tummy troubles that really flared up this week and everyone was very kind, thorough, and took the time to understand his history and my concerns while walking through our possible treatment options. We came back today to drop off some tests and I expressed that I was worried because he had a rough tummy night. They were able to have a look at him quickly and prescribe him some things to help us through the weekend, with a plan to check-in in a few days. I think many pet owners can relate that sometimes it is frustrating when we get told to wait it out or try the same things over and over, so I was surprised and incredibly grateful for the entire team trying their best to help us even though it was last minute. I can tell they really cared for Archie as much as I do, and that means a lot to me. Special thank you to Kendall and Ro for giving him lots of snuggles and comfort through his procedures. Thank you all so much. Hopefully you guys can see Archie in his full happy puppy energy soon!

Dr. Thornton and staff are most kind, they truly care about their patients and it shows. My senior kitty gets stressed out at the vet, so I appreciate the extra care and attention to detail to keep her as calm and comfortable as possible. They quickly diagnosed her issue and performed dental surgery. The staff was so helpful in her aftercare and in keeping me informed. I truly appreciate their kindness, highly recommend!

Excellent new vet in the Midtown/ Poverty Ridge area. Super responsive reception and vet tech team! So helpful and understanding, and so good with my cat. Dr. Thornton was fantastic with my boy, due for vaccinations and scheduling his neuter. They had a room specific to cats, and it had so many cat comforts in it - treats, Feliway, warm blankets, etc. Plus they had coffee for me! Just overall an excellent experience. Definitely will recommend to others.
