How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had the absolute worst vet experience with this clinic. First off I brought my two dogs in for a new patient visit and they kept mixing my dogs up- so much so that they mixed up their rabies vaccines. The front desk people were very rude and Dr. Rexford is the most least compassionate and unexperienced vet I have ever met. She didn’t listen either of my dogs hearts with stethoscope..she didn’t even have a stethoscope with her. One of my dogs is very healthy and didn’t need anything. The other one is showing signs of Cushing’s disease, which Dr. Rexford seemed to know nothing about. I asked her to draw blood and look at my dogs liver values because they were elevated in the past.. and that is a sign of Cushing’s disease and asked her if she had any other recommendations. She said she would draw the blood but didn’t have any other recommendations other than sending me to get an outpatient ultrasound done, which, by the way, it doesn’t happen. The office was unaware when I told them that UC Davis where they sent me does not accept outpatient ultrasounds from other vets. You have to be seen by their internal medicine doctor, who then orders ultrasound which altogether would’ve been about $900. That is insane. Why isn’t this office aware of where they send people and what can and cannot be done. All said and done. I paid well over $200 for basically just two Rabies shots for my dogs because that’s all I got accomplished.. and even those are a headache, because like I said before the vaccines were mixed up. I then had to go find a new vet because I would never go back there, and luckily, I found an amazing one. I told him what happened at Banfield with Dr. Rexford and he was appalled. This new vet was able to pretty much diagnose me dog with Cushing’s disease within a couple days and get her started on the right treatment to get her feeling better! I reached out to the office manager who is less than helpful. The only thing she was able to help me with is getting the rabies vaccines not mixed up.. at least on paper. I am still waiting for a call from the general manager named Jeff who has decided not to call me or any other management from Banfield. On top of all of that I had to go back to this terrible clinic to get NEW rabies vaccine records because I noticed BOTH of my dogs birthdays were wrong on the original ones they gave me. I called on a Wednesday to pick up on Saturday and was told they would be waiting for me at the front desk. On Saturday they had no idea what I was there to pick up, there was nothing left for me and just like before they had no idea about anything. The girl who was filling in as “manager” call me later on that day and said she was sorry for the mistake and she said she was going to refund me for the rabies vaccine since I had to get a new one and the office visit since I had to go to a different vet x2 dogs. This was weeks ago and I still never have received this refund. This just reaffirmed how horrible this clinic is. Whatever you do, I would avoid this clinic at all cost and if all Banfield clinics are like this, I would definitely recommend skipping all of them.

The receptionist - Alexa - was unbelievably rude when I called to schedule an appointment. I gave my phone number - she couldn't find the account and told me I had to figure it out and call her back. She wouldn't look up the account any other way. Then, after pushing, she found it and told me it was my fault because I gave her a different name. But she never asked for my name - she asked for my phone number. She then suggested it was probably under my husband's name - I don't have a husband. Turns out - it was under the correct phone number despite her talking to me like I'm an idiot. Definitely didn't need that when all I wanted was a day and time to bring my dog in.

HIGLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Banfield! They took such amazing care of me and my dog Rossco! He had to have all his teeth removed cause he's a old man and they were giving him problems! They got me right in and also took such good care of him while he was there! They were very communicative with me about the everything and also didn't charged me a arm and a leg!!! They worked with me alot on the price! And I absolutely love them for that!!!

They are THE best. I would trust all of the vets there with any of my pets. I have a cat and 3 dogs, and have seen every vet in the office on some occasion or another. Every Vet has treated us with care and compassion, and the Vet Techs are phenomenal. Even though some are allergic to cats, they still hold and care for my cat like it was their cat, and its very comforting to know that. My animals actually enjoy vet visits, which they never did before Banfield.
