How to Save Money at VCA California Veterinary Specialists-Ontario

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Will not recommend this place to anyone unless you wanna lose your dog unless you have $1000 to put down for life-saving treatment if they believe your dog or animal is in an emergency situation like that they will make you wait for up to 6 to 7 hours to tell you, it is not an emergency situation and to not help with your pet. I waited there on Saturday for seven hours to finally get a call back at 7:30 at night telling me that I needed to extend my weight longer I told them at that point I’m not coming back on top of all of that. They want you to wait in the parking lot until they’re ready to see you. If you leave their parking lot they will check you out Stephanie in the front is amazing. I absolutely am so thankful for her. She’s very kind very sweet and very helpful. I cannot say the same thing for anybody else in that. My dog has a tumor that started in his right eye that is spread continuously and rapidly. He is now having surgery to have the tumor removed. If not, he would’ve died within the next 24 hours so I’m so thankful I didn’t waste any more of my time with this place, and I found someone that will actually take care of my dog. Worst place ever and I even drove from Riverside to go there trying to get help for my butt because again she doesn’t hit by a car. He’s not an emergency.

Brought my grand daughter Sophie in to remove a non-healing hemorrhagic lesion and was attended by Dr. Peterson and her wonderful staff. Sophie’s doing great and we are so appreciative of the amazing work Dr. Peterson does at VCA!

My nephew Hero was fine this morning but became extremely sick late in the evening. We brought him to VCA and could not imagine taking him anywhere else. The staff were all so compassionate and kind. It was not what we expected or wanted to hear but it was our last day with Hero. The vet explained everything in detail and offered different options. As hard as it was for my nephew to make the decision, the vet and tech made it so much easier for him. They answered every question and they gave us as much time as we needed to say our goodbyes. I would recommend this hospital 100%. You will be missed Hero but our love will never fade away. 💔

We took my dog here as a last resort because our veterinarian did not have the equipment needed. Sadly, when they started treating her, her body couldn't handle it, and she passed away. Although this was the worst moment of my life, I felt they cared about my dog and I. We decided to go down the route of cremation. They had someone bring her ashes along with a paw print, a special box, and a note. The driver messaged me beforehand to ensure someone was home to receive her. Thank you to the staff who cared for my dog. She meant the world to me. I know the staff did everything they could to save her.

Bad, bad, bad experience. On Friday at 10:00 pm my dog attack my other dog. My family and I found out that my dog named bowbow was bleeding and that his eye was red and pop out. We rush our dog to the hospital. The front desk was nice they were comforting my dog. Then we told them what happened . We waited 2 hours because there was 1 doctor . My dog eye was an emergency it was red and out. Once after we waited 2 hours, they called us and went inside a room, We told them what happened in that accident. They told us that, they were gonna take him to the doctor and take some test, so they took him to get "test" Like 1 minute they called my sister and said that my dog was blind that that he couldn't blink and he needed surgery. We ask how much would be for the surgery and they told us that it would be "3,000" Just to get an eye fix. We can't pay that much for a surgery. So we just payed for Medicine “175” .we left and went to a different place the next day since it was already late. Once we went to the different place they attend us fast and told us that if we went once "1 hour or more earlier they would clean the eye and stick the eye in and would be fine. For the surgery it was 250$ for surgery on my dog on the eye. Wow so much better then paying thousands of dollars. Let us pay the half of the money and once my dog was done with the surgery, payed the rest. The other place we went was better then this “VET” they are unprofessional and only care about the money first then pet . DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE!! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE UNLESS IF U WANNA PAY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS
