Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Our 3-year-old Lab, Lilo, got a cactus spine stuck in her face that turned into an abscess. The staff were professional, kind, and took excellent care of her—we’re truly grateful for how quickly they acted and how well they treated her. That said, the cost of medications was extremely inflated. We were charged: $41.35 for 28 amoxicillin (500 mg), which costs $9 at our pharmacy $114.77 for 28 carprofen (75 mg) retails for $12. $32.41 for 28 gabapentin (300 mg), which usually costs $3.60. That’s $188.52 for prescriptions we could have filled for around $25. Honestly, I was too worried and focused on Lilo to stop and question the prices at the time. I didn’t ask for written prescriptions, and the meds are non-refundable—something I regret in hindsight. I don’t know if they’re getting gouged by suppliers or just overcharging the customers, but either way, the difference is hard to justify. Be aware of the costs and ask for written prescriptions—you may save a lot by filling them yourself. Reply: Thank you for your response. I appreciate the care your team gave to Lilo—it’s clear you have dedicated and compassionate staff. That said, your explanation about medication pricing still doesn't address the core issue: the markup on some of these medications is not just high, it’s excessive. To be specific: Rimadyl chews retail online and at chain pharmacies for around $12. I was charged $114.77. That’s an 856.4% markup. The gabapentin and amoxicillin were also drastically inflated. Even factoring in handling and storage, this kind of pricing feels exploitative—especially when clients are distracted by worry and trying to make the best choices for a sick or injured pet. Yes, I could have asked for a written prescription—but at the time, I was focused on my dog’s health, not comparing pharmacy prices. That’s the position many clients are in during a stressful emergency, and I feel like your clinic takes advantage of that. I understand veterinary clinics have overhead. But I also believe in transparency and fairness. Markups like this erode trust and leave clients feeling taken advantage of. I hope this feedback helps improve that aspect of your practice, because the quality of care certainly deserves better support from your pricing model.

Dr Silver and the staff at California Pet Hospital are everything a pet parent could hope for in a vet. They are knowledgeable, kind, love pets, professional and just all around wonderful. I took my 17 yr old cat in, transferred from another vet, for an aural hematoma (fluid between the skin and cartilage in the ear). Surgery was recommended, the procedure was well and patiently explained. Two days later my beloved cat, Simon, was in for surgery. Simon has been well cared for by ALL of the staff at California Pet Hospital. I have not experienced this level of outstanding service at a vet in years. My other 17 yr old cat, Amber, was brought in for a wellness check-up. Nothing urgent, just to get her under the amazing care of Dr Silver and the staff!

Everyone that we encountered was incredibly friendly and patient. They were great with my dog and with me. They took all the time that was needed to get us through our appointment. I would certainly recommend California Pet Hospital to anyone looking for a veterinarian.

A fantastic visit! New to the area and I was hoping to find a vet I like as much as my last one. As an owner of a diabetic animal, it was important to me that they seemed very knowledgeable about what we were dealing with and accommodating to it's current regimen. I think I found a new vet on the first try!

We bring all of our animals here. The staff is super friendly and helpful, and they make us feel welcomed. They answered all the questions that we had, and they go out of their way to meet and greet every animal in every pet as it comes in. I’ve been to a lot of vets, and this one is a good one. You can tell the whole staff enjoys what they do, even when it’s tough. Highly recommend.
