How to Save Money at Old Town Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our two Frenchies are both turning 5 this week a few days apart from each other. We have been to multiple vets in the area before coming to Old Town over a year ago. They are by far the best. Not even close. All of the vets there are fantastic, but their newest vet is Dr. Brown and she is amazing. She recently removed a cancerous Mast cell tumor from our dog Cash's head right by his eye. We had just been doing comfort care because we did not want to put him through a risky surgery, but medical complications from long-term Prednisone use changed our mind. Dr. Brown spent a lot of time checking with pharmaceutical companies, his oncologist and dermatologist to make sure she was giving Cash the best care and safest care possible, both before and after she successfully performed surgery to remove the tumor. No vet has EVER given our dogs the amount of time and quality of care that she has. Even tonight she returned our call with medical questions related to our other dog, and she must have spent 15-20 minutes with us on the phone at the end of her day. We highly recommend Old Town Veterinary Hospital. All of the doctors and staff have been great and extremely caring. Very reasonable pricing too, especially when compared to other vets.

Dr. Black and her staff are amazing! I love everything about this place. It was very clean, has a friendly office staff, no price gauging and reasonable rates. I was able to get right in for my scheduled appointment. Dr. Black was very caring, patient and understanding with my concerns for my 15 year old Jack Russell. She was very thorough with explaining the results of her bloodwork, and also was able to answer all my questions without being rushed. I want to highly recommend this office to anyone that wants five star treatment for their beloved pet. Thanks again to Dr. Black and her staff to making my experience pleasant.😊

They're not just expensive they're outrageously expensive...So being new to Southern California veterinarians, I have been checking prices your average Southern California veterinarian,( I'm not exaggerating) is at least 10 times more expensive than our neighboring States.... These guys are about 20 times more expensive, everybody else wanted 1200 to $2000 for cleaning and tooth extraction these guys wanted 2 to $4000. When I asked a veterinarian from Texas why the prices were so low Compared to Southern California he said "and I quote""these are all very hard working people ,salt of the Earth, if I charged that much I would not be able to sleep at night" BTW that doctor's visit was $28 And the cleaning and the removal of 4 teeth was a $168. IN RESPONSE TO OWNERS RESPONSE: Like I said in my review, I was checking prices, never did I say I made an appointment or was a client. I called to check prices before I made an appointment. I was told by the receptionist that it would be between $2k-4k. Why would you rip off such hard working people? Shame on you.

I love this Veterinary hospital. Their doctors are absolutely fantastic and all of their staff are kind and caring. I recommend them to everybody in the area who asks for a recommendation to a vet. I actually drive past a few other veterinary hospitals to get to Old Town Veterinary Hospital, because I think they are worth it. They are so very caring and my little dog loves going there.
