How to Save Money at Animal & Bird Clinic of Mission Viejo

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Bloch is the best, he is very kind, caring, and compassionate. He has taken excellent care of our two cats for many years and we have the utmost trust in him. Dr. Bloch not only cares about the wellbeing of pets but the owners as well. He goes above and beyond by personally calling to inform us of test results and following up after non routine visits, sometimes even on his day off. The staff is also helpful and great. We highly recommend Dr. Bloch.

DR. BLOCH, RODENT PARENTS BEWARE. First, I want to start by saying that Dr. Hall is absolutely amazing. She is so gentle with our tiny fur babies and always makes sure that their little voices are being heard. When one of our guinea pigs came down with a bit of a wheeze, we wanted to bring him in as soon as possible to be seen. The earliest available appointment was with Dr. Bloch, which we obviously took. Dr. Bloch quickly examined our guinea pig, and decided that he was in perfect health besides being slightly underweight. They charged us $160 for the visit (which has since been refunded) and suggested that we bring him back in a month for a check up. Less than 48 hours after seeing Dr. Bloch and more than $1,200 in emergency room visits, our guinea pig passed away from pneumonia that turned into sepsis. Had Dr. Bloch performed ANY diagnostics or offered ANY treatment at all, our guinea pig would’ve had a fighting chance at recovery. Because of his negligence, we have lost our precious fur baby and over a thousand dollars.

My family boarded our red bellied parrots while we were abroad. They took such great care of them. They really did a great job. and the gentlemen who took care of them brought them out to me and just based off of his demeanor you could tell he enjoyed caring for them and was passionate for the work he does. I could tell that they had been very well cared for. I would recommend this vet to anyone with Birds or otherwise.

I have taken 6 pets to Animal & Bird Clinic over 30 years. Dr Coward & Associates are the best vets in the area. My pets are cared for like they are one of their own family and they receive nothing but the most modern, comprehensive care available. I am convinced their compassionate care has helped all my cats live their best, very long live possible. I have had 2 male cats who had urinary crystals, and the raw natural diet Dr Coward recommended not only healed but cured the conditions. His knowledge is encyclopedic and helped provide not only relief for my cats but I believe helped to give both cats 18 years of life. And, when it's time to say "I'll meet you at the Rainbows Bridge", they help you walk your pet to the Bridge with kindness and compassion. On the worst day of a pet owners life they not only care for your pet but also you. Truly can't recommend Animal & Bird Clinic enough. Highest recommendation A++

My moms parrot was non stop plucking feathers and she was concerned. So I called to ask could we come in. They said, “Sure” I let them know claws needed trimmed and beak filed too. They said ok. They had me sit outside in hot Sun and took back bird. After an hour a tech came out and said Dr didn’t see any obvious health problems. I asked to see the Dr and was told it’d be another hour or so? I then asked about claws and beak? Was told we don’t have the tools. They gave me the bird. And I left without being asked to pay and certainly didn’t offer to
