How to Save Money at Redwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They're taking new patients and have a wait-list which is fine but I just felt that the staff was rude, short, and snooty. I also don't understand why it's an "animal hospital" if it's a regular vet that you need to make regular appointments with and not an actual hospital that treat actual hospital emergencies.

they were very professional and kind at the same time. We were very lucky that they had a cancelation at the end of the day. They worked overtime to help us out with our big boy.

Do not bring your furbaby here, mine is dead due to their negligence and malpractice. My kitty turned out to be terminally sick when I finally took her into the vet on 2/9/19 at Redwood Animal Hospital. They charged me for an office visit, FELV/FIV/Feline Heartworm test, CBC/CHEM17/T4/LYTES/SDMA blood panel, vetipuncture, subcutaneous fluids, Covenia injection, B-vitamin injection, Mirtazapine-15 mg injection, Nutrical-4 oz nutritional supplement, and 3 cans of Feline A/D 5.5 oz urgent care food. When requested subcuteaneous fluids for home use we were declined. The Ambiguity of her overall health were presented to us as if she were strong to be surviving at 4.5 Lbs, with an upper respiratory illness. She dropped all of her weight in the span of a week, from 8.6 pounds to 4.5 pounds on 2/9/19. She was 8.5 pounds 3 weeks ago; weight loss was very rapid. Contradictory to these factors, Neal R. Winnacott, Veterinarian suggested a chance for her to recover. However, Monday 2/11/19, we returned home around 4:30 pm to her in the litter box, dazed. She wasn't walking voluntarily; concerned I panicked and promptly called the vet. The woman who answered, Tonya Wilson, the vet's registered veterinary technician; I told her what happened I knew desperately that something was very wrong; to which, She dismissively counseled, "oh don't worry about it, this is normal, we have cats at the hospital do this all the time" and not to bring her in. She quelled my panicking and I left; but 3 hours later I returned home from a couple of errands to find my boyfriend huddled over her where she had died. They dropped the ball and I did not bring her in and she suffered till her death. Upon speaking to other cat owners and ranchers in the last few days, its become apparent this is a very common and normal procedure; doing subcutaneous fluids at home twice a day for cats in stages of CKD. We were refused this option when we asked, we were ambiguously denied; she wouldn't have survived more than a few weeks on Subcutaneous treatment, however, I would have been happy to give her the fluids at home; I would have had a chance to say goodbye and spend some time with her: and these revelations indicate the vet is responsible for her pain, and early death. I spoke to both Dr. Winnacott and Tonya on the phone on 2/12/19; both dismissively, stated, "oh I'm sorry but this is kind of how it goes" Tonya Wilson said she didn't think I wanted to go the hospitalization route, yet they never asked me nor ordered subcutaneous fluids other than in the clinic. Dr. Winnacott said in hindsight, he didn't think there was anything else he could have done for her; earlier, I directly asked that specific question about fluids. However, Dr. Winnacott did mention his shop cat having survived 3 years so far with CKD, as his shop cat was somehow better than Felicity in order to receive treatment when he refused to treat her. I severely question his professional judgement. Upon receiving a copy of Felicity's medical record, the creatinine results were .4 mg/dL, indicating stage 1 of chronic kidney disease. She was also diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Dr. Winnacott seemed to have decided that she was not going to make it at that time, however she may have been able to be rehabilitated to much better health than she was in. She may have had a much longer life but the clinic decided that was not going to happen for my kitty. When I arrived home around 8 pm on 2/11/19 to find her deceased, she looked like it was very painful, her eyes were both wide open as was her mouth with her tongue sticking out. It pains me to know that she went through so much pain and suffering due to the negligence and malpractice at Redwood Animal Hospital from Dr. Winnacott and Tonya Wilson. It is 3 days later and I am still crying a lot and very much upset at how she was treated at the end of her life. Needless to say I will never be returning to Redwood Animal Hospital and the monsters that work there.

I have been taking both my dogs here for about 7 years now, and have nothing but good things to say. They always take great care of my dogs and do what they can to be helpful. The other day i noticed a large swelling in my dogs ear and called and left a message around 8pm. I wasn’t expecting a call back right away since it was after hours and i didnt call the emergency line, but Dr winnacott called me back within minutes to talk to me about the situation and to schedule to have it taken care of asap. He also always spends time to explain in detail any issues my dogs are having so i can understand them and be on top of it.

Way way way better than McKinleyville vet. Redwood A.H. has a quarantine room to separate your sick pet from others. McKinleyville vet doesn't. The guys that run Redwood A.H. are so nice and very happy to help you with any questions. Just love Redwood A.H. Updated several years later, I'm still extremely happy with the service and care from Redwood A.H. we've added a new dog to the family and they've taken great care of him too. Definitely recommend.
