How to Save Money at VCA Los Banos Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Tried to get a prescription filled on Monday, was put on hold for over 20 minutes, then told to try back later. Called back the same day, was put on hold again only to be told someone would call me back by the end of the day. No one called back. I called again two days later and nothing had progressed. It was like I never called on Monday. They told me it was taking so long because there is only one doctor. That sounds like a pretty solvable problem. First, I don't see how one doctor prevents the rest of the staff from calling me back. Second, having one doctor shouldn't be an excuse for delaying care as simple as filling a prescription; especially not at a VCA. If not enough doctors is the problem, hire more doctors so that you can run your business more efficiently. Like professionals should. For context, my pet has thyroid issues and is very dependent on his medication. I wish I could give zero stars.

I am the Great Papyrus

They gave us our baby back! Our little boy, Sugarpie (male cat, long-haired), was super sick. He wouldn't eat anything, was losing weight, just basically dying slowly in front of us. We knew we couldn't afford a vet bill, but hated seeing him suffer. So, I brought him to the VCA. The staff was excellent, everyone was nice. The doctor wanted to do blood work and x-rays test.. Sugarpie had bronchitis or pneumonia and was put on an IV for a week. He pulled through and is back to normal! We thank Dr. Mason so much, we know without her care, Sugarpie wouldn't be here right now.

I would give 0 stars if I could. I was on a call inquiring whether they could certify that my dog had been neutered in a foreign country when they said that they could not do that and hung up in my face. Never bring your animal here. If they cannot treat humans with respect then how do you think they will treat your pets?

I called for appointment for a rabies shot for my pup. They said I had to have dog exam, price $76, He had been in recently for exam. This price DID NOT include vaccination. This is unacceptable and way to high for someone on SS. Got a next day appointment with Petco vet. No large fees. This is the second time they pulled this on me at VCA. I was already there and had to pay almost $200 for a rabies shot for my other pup. All the vet did was fell her tummy, take her temp, and say her teeth may need cleaning soon. About 5 minutes with the doc. These prices are way to high for the care they give.

This is the worse Veterinary clinic I have every been to. If we brought her in early and the told us sorry one Dr on call and to come back later. So I called and told them what was going on and they said Dr went to lunch and will be back at two and we could come in then. So I take her in iam the first person there she wanted the owner to sigh so I called her she came over sign the paperwork. So the lady with the big ugly fake eye lashes behind the count says your third in line and it will take one to three hours. When I was the first one there. So she put me third instead of first. I am telling her that she going to die if we wait any longer. She then tells us we can take her to another vet. I told them if she dies it's their fault. Then we where leaving I said your supposed to save animals not send you to another vet. All of a sudden they said someone cancelled and they would take her in they do test they say she septic give her antibiotics sent her home and she passed. Shame on these people for not helping her and sending her home. I will never take my pets here oh hell know.
