How to Save Money at Wayfarer Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Fernandez is a wonderful vet who keeps her prices reasonable. In addition, she accepts walk-ins which is almost unheard of by other vets! This is so appreciated because most vets will have you wait a week or two to make an appointment. If your pet is in trouble then you were forced to either waste that long, in which case your pet may not survive, or to take your animal to one of these "emergency places" like VSA where they will charge you thousands of dollars and make you wait a long time anyway. Dr. Fernandez always has wonderful assistance working with her as well. Do you be aware that Crystal, the receptionist although she is very smart and very helpful may seem a bit short With some people. That's just her personality. She is just no nonsense. I have taken my cats to see Dr. Fernandez kittens and seniors for about 20 years now!

I try to go during walk in hours so I get seen as soon as I can. I’ve taken my 1 year old kittens and my senior cat and the doctor is always helpful and communicative. Be sure to be prepared to ask questions no matter where you go ! Get your pets spayed/neutered through Spay4LA and get the discount voucher for LA residents. But for other pet issues like nonfatal injuries or sickness I would recommend this vet. Also worth mentioning my pets are indoor only, and I don’t make a lot of money so this place is affordable for me.

Dr. Fernandez and her team are amazing! Thank you Dr.Fernandez, Roberto and Kristy! First time and had an amazing visit will be coming back soon for my cats. I called in the morning because I thought my cat was ill. They are so accommodating, no appointment. Our old vet practice, his clients referred in reviews to see Dr. Fernandez instead. So happy I did, I found our new vet, can tell she's and her team are extremely great and experienced with cats. My kitty was the last one in his cat family to get neutered, first time to the vet. I had never seen this with our other cats and their vet visit, he was so calm, not scared. I been to 3 different vets in the area for our cats castration process, this is truly the best vet experience we had in years. It feels my cat didn't even notice/care he got snipped, he's the same great demeanor IN and leaving the clinic. She gave great consultation in aftercare, I love her care instructions, different color, precise and easy to follow instructions. Very happy I can trust vets again, our last vet office has really left a bad experience. Wayfarer is amazing! Especially compared to what we had experience with the local vets/emergency hospital in this area.

The receptionist would not allow us to talk to the veterinarian and would give us attitude. The veteran would constantly give us different prices and would say that the dog will die if we do not go through with the procedure after we spent over $1,000 she kept on bring up more test which weren’t necessary and had nothing to do with my dogs kidney problems she eventually gave us pills to give to r dog but would not proscribe more once we said the dog was getting better she said that to get the pills we would have to go through more procedures (things that had nothing to do with her damaged kidney) the veterinarian later proscribed a type of dog food that would help strengthen the kidney but would not write the proscription and said if we wanted the dog food we would have to buy it from her (to obtain this dog food you need a proscription) the food sold for $12 dollars at pet smart but she sold the same bag for $50 if you want to save your pet do NOT take them here due to this money hungry lady my dog passed she overcharges and under-delivers.
