How to Save Money at VCA ASEC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my dog to VCA ASEC for a splenectomy. (She had a large tumor on her spleen.) It was expensive, but the doctors are highly recommended by people I trust, and the facility is well staffed with competent people. They are very organized and service quality remains high even during busy times. You are given appointment times for pet drop off, pick up, and procedures such as suture removal. Discharge instructions are thorough and provided in a packet by a doctor's assistant who can answer any questions you have. As for the procedure itself, I received a call from the doctor both before and after surgery. Since my dog was spending a night in the ICU, I brought a couple of cans of her regular food. Upon discharge, I was told that she ate a good breakfast of the food I brought, and the extra can was returned to me with a hospital label indicating which dog it was for. The entire experience felt like: "Don't worry, we do this all the time. We know what we're doing." which honestly was all I wanted.

Came here while visiting family in LA for a ucla graduation and we are forever grateful for the staff here, we were here for a few hours and we witnessed the staff interact with regulars and with new people/fur babies and they honestly treated everyone like VIP, they were honest, caring and upfront with fees before moving forward with care or treatment. If you need an emergency veterinarian, don’t hesitate and come here. This place has everything you might need to get your fur baby taken care of.

We had a really positive experience at this VCA location. Our 1 year old goldendoodle Tobi was having stomach problems, and he wasn't eating. The vet and staff here were extremely communicative, patient, and thorough. I could tell they were organized and cared about making sure Tobi was healthy. They suggested that he stay the night to receive an IV. I was nervous to have him sleep there, but when we picked him up he was completely back to himself, and I could tell he was getting great care throughout his time there. I was hesitant seeing other reviews, but our experience was truly beyond what I could have hoped for. Thank you so much Dr. Ross and the staff!

My poor baby boy got very sick a few weeks ago and I had to rush him here. Although the wait was quite long the staff here are honestly amazing and I really appreciate each and every one of them. I’ve had some really bad experiences with ER vets and now I will only bring him here if he ever God forbid needs to go back. I trust the vets and the staff here - they are both very competent and also empathetic. I’m so glad that I brought him here instead of the other VCA on Sepulveda. I went there the other day to get his prescription food and in was like being in the twilight zone dealing with them. I highly recommend this ER clinic.

I've brought my dog here twice for emergencies. Once at 2am on a weekday and another time during a holiday weekend. Both times my dog was admitted quickly and overall the experience and support was positive. The doctors and diagnosis all made sense and was explained fully. Wait times are what you'd expect, not immediate and not exclusively long. I didn't feel like I was ripped off like some other reviews. Definitely will come back if I need a 24/7 vet ER.
