How to Save Money at Urgent Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Really wonderful vet's office with super caring staff. Prices are reasonable, vets are great at working with you to figure out the best course of treatment for your needs, and the wait times are actually super reasonable. Always important to note that this is an Urgent Care vet, so even if you make an appointment, pets are going to be treated in order of medical priority. But we've always been able to make an appointment for quite soon, and when we've been there, we've really never waited for more than an hour to see someone as a walk in. We got the news this week unfortunately that our dog is going to go on palliative care. Never an easy thing to discover for you or your vet, but the staff here was so supportive and caring through the whole diagnosis process and beyond. Even in this devastatingmoment, I can confidently say that our pup has been in very good hands with this vet.

Took my dog who was having a heat stroke and the medical tech immediately came to my car to pick him up and start working on Buddy. He was in critical condition and they were able to save my boy. I was parked right in front an ran in there asking for help. He stood in the hospital for 2 days. Took him for a follow up the following week and he was back to normal health. In case you're asking, no I didn't leave him in the car. We went for a walk in a shady area in Griffith Park. I myself don't do well in the heat so I'm careful with exposure and we were walking not running... At the vet hospital I was told maybe because he's still young a year and a half. IDk just greatful they saved his life. They immediately started working on him. Put him on IV transfusion of plasma blood work, xrays the works. They also kept me informed while he was in the hospital with regular phone calls. They saved my Buddy boy. ;). He was popular there, very much liked 👍 😄

I took my cat, Will, here after I noticed he looked like he was in pain. Turns out he ate an entire felt string off a cat toy. The vets and vet techs at this place saved his life. Will wouldn’t be here without them and I am so grateful. He had to get intensive surgery and we almost lost him but this place did an amazing job. Will had made a complete recovery and it back with his twin brother playing and eating and enjoying his life. Thank you so much to the talented team here!!

This clinic is outrageously expensive. They charged me nearly $700 to euthanize my cat, which is three times the amount other local veterinarians charge and even higher than some at-home services. I don’t know if they triple the standard charge for all of their services or just when someone is grieving and trying to help their suffering animal, but either way, it’s absolutely horrible to take advantage of grieving people. Eagle Rock has a lot of choices for veterinary services, so I’d advise you to look elsewhere.

My 16-year-old cat was acting strangely, not eating food or drinking water. We could no longer wait for our regular vet, so we went to UCAH on a Sunday evening. We received terrible news that she was severely septic and had masses in her lungs. She had to be immediately hospitalized and stayed for 2 nights. The care that Dr. Vikas Jaglan and all the vet techs (shout out Genesis) gave her is what saved her. They have been checking in with us regularly, with the doctor even calling us with updates and answering our questions on his vacation. Dr. Priyanka Hawkins even saw us for additional care when we were concerned about her after being discharged. Everyone has been straightforward yet compassionate and only charged for necessary procedures and medications. Regardless of our cat's outlook, they gave us more time with her, and that means everything to us.
