How to Save Money at Rivers Veterinary

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Rivers Vet has been amazing with my dogs! One of them had a severe allergy with open wounds from scratching, and within just a week of treatment — including three different medications and special wipes — she showed incredible improvement. Her scabs are falling off to reveal healthy, healed skin underneath! They ran all the necessary blood tests, and for a 12-year-old dog, she’s doing fantastically well. The staff is always warm and welcoming, and the wait time is reasonable. Parking can be tricky, especially on Saturdays since the laundromat next door gets busy, but honestly, it’s a small price to pay for such wonderful care. One staff member even remembered me and my pup from years ago at another clinic when we were dealing with a similar issue — that kind of genuine connection really says it all. Highly recommend Rivers Vet for their compassion, professionalism, and fair pricing!

As a first-time pet parent, I was super nervous and had so many questions, but the entire team at Rivers Veterinary has been amazing every step of the way! They always take the time to answer everything thoroughly and make sure I feel comfortable and informed. You can truly tell everyone there loves animals and genuinely cares, not just about the pets but about their humans too. I’ve been here twice now, and most recently my kitty had his neuter surgery a week ago. They were incredibly informative about what to expect and gave me clear aftercare instructions. I also love the little personal touches, from writing your pet’s name on the exam room door to remembering both you and your pet by name. It’s a privately owned clinic, so it’s a bit pricier than city or state ones, but honestly, it’s so worth it for the level of care, kindness, and peace of mind you get. Thank you so much, Rivers Veterinary team! 💕 – K & S 🐾

Just switched to Rivers and after one appt for my senior cat, I'm impressed. Everyone is kind and friendly, and I felt like this was the first veterinarian I've seen that truly took my cat's pain seriously. They were easy to get into, quick to respond, and very thorough with all the information/instructions I was given.

I got my little kitten Milo neutered today, and the experience was absolutely wonderful. Drop-off was smooth, they were incredibly communicative about pickup times, working with my schedule, and everyone at pickup was genuinely caring, helpful, and kind. The post-op instructions were clear (and Sam went through them with me to make sure I had no questions!), and the medication was explained thoroughly as well as portioned easy for me. You could really tell how much they cared for Milo—who was understandably terrified. They even created a soft, cozy spot in his carrier to help him feel more comfortable. I think the post experience made him at least know he was loved and cared for there, because now at home he's so cuddly, loving, and relaxed. -- 10/10 would recommend!

Most of the vets are great, but one of them (Dr. Acosta) weirdly hates dogs. If your dog barks once when they walk in she'll immediately ask the assistant to muzzle them, even if you tell them they don't bite. Super weird. Nice staff though.
