How to Save Money at Modern Animal Downtown LA

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog recently had to have a few teeth pulled, and I was understandably nervous. Aside from grooming, he’s never really been away from me, especially not for something involving anesthesia. What helped calm my nerves was receiving a photo of him in his crate before surgery. He looked relaxed and content, and it felt like the team instinctively knew I needed that reassurance. We’ve visited Modern Animal DTLA a few times since becoming members, and I’ve consistently had a positive experience. The staff is genuinely caring and always prioritizes my dog’s well-being. I will say, they are expensive. I did get quotes elsewhere. But when it came down to it, I chose safety and quality of care, especially with anesthesia involved. My dog is doing well, and I have no regrets. Thank you to the Modern Animal team for taking such good care of my baby.

5/5 stars for my short experience. I ended up going with another vet for budget reasons. But I had a great experience here. I was blinded with anxiety about the health of my puppy. She had a little problem but I had no clue where to take her. A friend referred me here. After seeing other positive reviews I went ahead and drove over there. They are appointment only but were very accommodating. Checked out my pup, took her to the back to generally assess what was happening. The nurses were very very sweet with her. And reassuring to me. I liked that this place was transparent about their prices on their website, so you know generally what you’d be walking into. They were awesome and offered me an appointment the same day, or the next day to take care of the issue as soon as possible. So I think this would be a generally great place to bring your pets. And they do validate an hour of parking apparently as well. I could not find their parking garage but maybe with a call ahead or something.

First time visit. I was skeptical cause the name and the appearance seem like its out of my budget. But it was actually one of the most affordable ive been to (and possibly the best). You can tell they love to do their job. They took care of me and my kitten so fast. I was in and out in 30 minutes. Again the prices are affordable affordable affordable! I can rave so much more about Modern Animal. The treatment I saw of other pets as well was more than enough to convince me I was in the right place. Thank you To Dr. Han and Sabrina for their help with my 3 week old kitten ! We will be coming back for his long term care

i am writing regarding my recent visit to modern animal pet hospital with my cat on 01/14/2026. during this visit, my cat presented with hacking, sneezing, congestion, dry heaving, and labored breathing. i expressed my concerns about a possible respiratory infection and the difficulty she was having breathing. during the visit, i was recommended a series of extensive tests, including a respiratory infection test, that totaled around $2,000. i asked the vet assistant for guidance on what she would personally recommend, and she suggested internal testing of blood, urine, and stool at $523 but did let us know she was unsure and it could be a respiratory infection. trusting their professional guidance as i am not a veterinarian but aware we could be wrong, we proceeded with that, and my cat was sent home with only an immune system supplement, with no treatment or relief for her clear respiratory symptoms. i was told the supplement “might help,” but nothing was done to address her breathing difficulties. additionally, i did make staff aware that she had gotten worse overnight, showing additional symptoms like hiding and appetite loss. in retrospect, i now see that my cat had clear signs of an upper respiratory infection, and a different test or approach might have been more appropriate. however, i also feel that i should not have been expected to make that medical decision on my own, given my limited knowledge, and that the staff should have clearly guided me toward the most urgent and relevant care for her symptoms. i do want to note that everyone at the clinic was very friendly, kind, and attentive to me and my cat, luna, and i truly appreciated the care and compassion shown during the visit. this makes it even harder to reconcile that the urgent symptoms were not addressed appropriately, despite their kindness. shortly after, my cat’s condition worsened, and i had to take her to an emergency vet, where she was diagnosed with a respiratory infection and feline herpes—conditions that clearly required immediate attention. it was very distressing to realize that the symptoms i had been reporting were serious and needed treatment, rather than simply internal testing and supplements. as a young adult, i am not in a financial position to spend $500 or more freely, especially when the testing did not address the immediate and obvious symptoms my cat was experiencing. while internal tests can be useful in some cases, they did not address the visible signs of respiratory distress in this situation and delayed appropriate care. although i am appreciative of these tests and know they are still good to be done, after visiting another vet, it now seems very obvious by her worsening symptoms. i am requesting a formal review of my case, as well as clarification on why treatment for obvious respiratory symptoms was not initiated despite my concerns and following the guidance of your staff, and how future patients in similar situations can receive timely and appropriate care without being expected to make complex medical decisions on their own. thank you for your time and consideration. i look forward to your response.

I wanted to take the time to extend my deepest gratitude to Modern Animal Downtown LA. I know every single pet owner loves their fur babies, and when the time comes for them to cross over, it is beyond a difficult decision. On January 26, after 9 years together, I had to make this difficult decision for our beloved Ares. Ares started off as my late husband’s dog, and he was my lifeline and constant companion during my cancer and my husband’s passing. Ares was my protector. I cannot express in words how utterly thankful I am to Modern Animal. Ares’ health had declined quickly, and the appointment was made within a day. I was greeted by George and Kaitlyn. George had a kind smile, and was very helpful. Kaitlyn was a blessing who was full of compassion and sympathy. Kaitlyn has absolutely found her calling in the world of veterinary care, and I hope she continues her incredible journey. They explained the process of what would happen, and went to every effort to make sure I kept my hand on Ares, and was there with him the whole way. Nothing was ever done that was out of place, and I knew when to comfort my beloved dog. They gave me treats so he could eat bacon-flavored cheese wiz off my fingers, which he enjoyed. Don’t be confused when the vet comes in looking all of a teenager – I assure you, he is not. Dr. Yang listens intently and intensely to everything you have to say about your beloved pet. He is calm, reserved, and sincere. He is respectful, and I always felt he cared deeply about the whole situation, and never did I feel judged for missing a vet appointment last year when money was tight. I felt like we were one big family losing a family pet – they were all there for Ares, and Dr. Yang brought honor and respect to a difficult process. To each and every one of the people who treated me like family here, and walked Ares across the rainbow bridge, I have nothing but thanks, and hope that their lives are blessed.
