How to Save Money at Metropolitan Animal Specialty Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this animal hospital! I am so grateful to Dr. Gerhardt and each and every person on staff for taking such amazing care of my dog, and for being so kind to me too. My 16 year old cockapoo was showing signs of a stroke at 2:30 am, and I was so grateful that MASH was open and able to see him immediately. My sweet pup received incredible care, and is now home and healthy thanks to everyone at MASH! From the first phone call, to the staff member who met us curbside to take my fur baby inside, to Dr. Gerhardt and the overnight team, I am so grateful that my sweet pup received the best care during a scary emergency situation. THANK YOU!!

I had a sick cat who has always been terrified of going anywhere, including when I had to take him up to MASH in the middle of the night. By the time I got to bring Sam home, I could tell that the staff genuinely love animals and making sure they're healthy and ok. From the initial call to let them know I was bringing my cat in to after I picked him up everyone I spoke with at the hospital seemed as though they were there just to help get Sam better. The professionalism and compassion is unparalleled. This is where I will take my cats should I need care for them. It was so comforting to see Sam calm, and happy when I brought him home. If I could give more than five stars, I most definitely would! I highly recommend MASH Animal Hospital.

I went to MASH a week and a half ago to put my dog Lola to sleep. They were all so kind and caring. The vet couldn’t have been nicer. They also sent in what I think was a grief counselor to talk to me about Lola and what to do with her afterwards. He also couldn’t have been nicer. It made a terribly painful experience bearable. They sent me home with a folder containing the Rainbow Bridge poem and some info on grief support groups that they offer. I also did not have to wait long and the bill wasn’t that expensive. And I just received a sympathy card in the mail with a small paper paw with wildflower seeds to plant in my garden. It really made my day. I highly recommend them.

My cat spent almost a week in the hospital here and had major surgery as well. Not only did they save his life, they greatly improved his quality of life. He's better now than he has been in years. The doctors and staff I dealt with were all exceptionally kind and caring. So in spite of some negatives (below) I would absolutely definitely go back here again if I ever had to. The downside is that you will wait a long time. And then wait some more. I'm talking hours and hours. Even to just pick up a prescription. Be prepared before you go. They're either short staffed or there are other animals in worse shape than yours, or maybe both. It was very expensive - I've never had this type of experience elsewhere with a pet, so I have nothing to compare to. It would probably be a lot cheaper in Oklahoma but that's not where I live. I had to take out a loan to pay for the surgery. They do ask for a large deposit up front, but they also refund you the balance if it's not all needed.

Protect and save your loved ones; do not bring them here! We brought our Cavapoo here the other day against our feelings/thoughts of this place after reading many reviews. They charged us $7,800 upfront before admitting our puppy. Regardless of one's excellent credit and financial position, this place treats you like a fruadulent fugitive and requires 85% upfront! Serious red flag! We were not fond of the staff; they seemed to lack the necessary communication and common sense skills. Worse yet, they seriously lack accuracy and attention to detail. They cannot even document our puppy's correct DOB. On our invoice, they have our puppy's DOB as 9/22/2020. Ridiculous! It was 9/22/23 when we brought our puppy here. She was born 10/18/2019. Extremely scary if they make ridiculous mistakes like that who's to say how lethal of mistakes they will make when it comes to our dog's well being?! When leaving our puppy here Friday evening, a doctor never contacted us with the status until 3:00 pm the following day; nearly twenty-four hours later! The doctor and staff continuously informed us we could see our puppy anytime day or night, twenty-four hours/day and to just show up. When calling Friday night to check the status of our puppy, the assistent informed us we could come to see her any time day/night, 24-hours/day. I decided to check on the puppy this morning. I showed up and was instructed to wait. I waited in the lobby for ten minutes until some rude, uneducated laborer named Jenny, claiming to be the physician assistant, came out and rudely told me I cannot see my puppy because she's in an oxygen chamber. I already knew she was in an oxygen chamber, the doc knew that and insisted we could still see her from outside the chamber. Jenny was so rude, I attempted to explain that the doc informed us we could come any time. She continuously cut me off, talked over me and told me I should have called then walked away. I immedieately demanded they give me my dog! There is no way in hell I will leave my dog with a place that hires someone like Jenny and obviously finds Jenny's behavior acceptable. Considering my current state of mind following this unacceptable ordeal, I had an associate contact this vet and ask to speak to a supervisor or manager on duty in attempt to mediate the unacceptable situation. The front desk person informed him they have no supervisor or manager on duty during the weekend! What in the hell?!! For a 24/7 emergency hospital, that is a seriuos liability! It also explains the horrible, subpar service! Save your loved ones and money, do not bring them to this vet!
