How to Save Money at Los Angeles Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve been a client of this clinic for two years and have consistently gone to the Boyle Heights location without major issues. Due to a scheduling conflict, I had to visit the Jefferson location, and the experience was unacceptable. I waited over an hour just to be seen. During the visit, the doctor insisted my 13-year-old dog needed blood work solely because he has been on trazodone long-term, despite having no symptoms, no health issues, and no changes in behavior. My dog is active, eats quality food, and still plays fetch. When I asked for a clear medical reason, I was given vague explanations about organ failure “possibly” happening at any time, without any indication that this was urgent or medically necessary. I was then told that regular trazodone refills would be withheld unless I agreed to blood work, costing about $200. This was presented as a condition, not a recommendation. What makes this more concerning is the inconsistency. The doctor had no issue extending the blood work requirement by a month and a half previously, yet suddenly refused to approve even a few additional days, despite it being the holiday season, when scheduling is especially difficult. This shift had nothing to do with my dog’s health — again, there were no symptoms, no illness, and no indication of anything wrong. This felt like a tactic: withholding a long-standing, regular medication to force an abrupt checkup, rather than working with me to find a reasonable timeline or middle ground. The situation worsened over the phone. When I said that conditioning my dog’s medication on immediate testing felt like arm-twisting, the nurse took it personally and escalated the conversation by invoking their “legal right.” From that point on, the tone became dismissive and punitive instead of professional. My dog has separation anxiety and depends on this medication. I work 70–75 hours a week, and abruptly stopping it is not an option. Despite asking multiple times, the doctor refused to speak with me directly, claiming to be too busy, and instead relied on a receptionist who acted as a gatekeeper and repeatedly misrepresented my requests. I actively tried to compromise. I agreed to pay for the blood work and asked either to come in the next day or to receive enough medication to bridge the gap until testing could be done. Both were refused. I was told there was no guarantee my dog would receive his medication even if I showed up, which felt like a power trip rather than patient care. To make matters worse, the receptionist made false claims about what I was asking for, portrayed me as unreasonable, and placed me on extended holds for long periods of time. Seeking clarification or a second opinion was met with condescension rather than discussion. This experience was unnecessarily hostile and inflexible. Withholding regular medication as leverage, refusing direct communication, and arbitrarily tightening requirements without medical cause is not how veterinary care should be handled. The consequences of this behavior were taken out on my dog, not me. This review applies specifically to the Jefferson location. My experiences at Boyle Heights have never been handled this way. After this experience, I noticed that other reviews also mention rude, dismissive behavior from some staff at this location, which unfortunately aligns with what I experienced.

I want to take a moment to sing the praises of LA Veterinary Center on Jefferson, because places like this are rare and deserve to be celebrated loudly and often. From the moment you walk through the doors, you can feel that this is not a factory, not a conveyor belt of appointments, not a cold or hurried operation. This is a practice built with heart, integrity, and genuine love for animals and the humans who adore them. The foundation of that spirit is clearly rooted in the vision of Dr. Martinez, whose dedication and compassion radiate throughout every corner of the clinic. You can tell immediately that this practice was created to serve, to heal, and to protect, not just to process. What truly elevates LA Veterinary Center into something exceptional, though, is the human kindness that meets you right at the front desk. Lori and Marissa are absolute angels. They do not simply check you in and move on. They listen. They care. They advocate. They go out of their way, and then somehow find another way beyond that, to help resolve situations, answer questions, calm nerves, and make sure you and your beloved pet feel supported every step of the way. Their warmth and professionalism turn what can often be a stressful experience into one that feels grounded, reassuring, and humane. I am also profoundly grateful for their pricing philosophy. LA Veterinary Center operates with a level of fairness and transparency that feels almost unheard of these days. Their pricing policies reflect ethics, not opportunism. You never feel taken advantage of, pressured, or cornered. Instead, you feel respected. That alone speaks volumes about the character of the practice and the values guiding it. In a world where veterinary care can sometimes feel rushed, impersonal, or financially punishing, LA Veterinary Center stands as a beacon of what is still possible when compassion leads the way. This is a place where animals are treated with dignity, guardians are treated with respect, and trust is earned through consistent kindness and excellence. Thank you to Dr. Martinez for creating such a beautiful, principled practice. Thank you to Lori and Marissa for being the calm, capable, caring faces who hold it all together with grace and generosity. And thank you to the entire team for proving that exceptional care and genuine humanity can, and should, coexist. If you are looking for a veterinary practice that truly cares, this is it. 🙏🏻🐾💜🐾🙏🏻

I came to this location because I needed a second opinion on my fur baby. Though I knew deep down I would have to euthanize her, I didn’t want to believe it. When they provided their recommendation to in fact, euthanize my baby, not only were they compassionate with the news, but they spoke with such empathy. The day I took my baby to be euthanized, they provided me with comfort, space and unlimited time. They explained the process step-by-step and they didn’t rush me. Overall they made the experience as pleasant as they could despite the circumstances. Their partners at West Coast Pet Memorial Services exceeded my expectations when it came to delivering my fur baby. The delivery was not only respectful but out of this word, beautiful. Today marks, one week and one day since I lost my baby. I came home from work and in the mail, I had received a card full of comments expressing sympathy, and reminders that my baby is in a better place- all written by the staff. Words cannot express how truly grateful I am for this place.

The two receptionists should not be in front-facing roles. They were cold, dismissive, and completely lacking empathy especially unacceptable for clients coming in for a euthanasia appointment. Their attitude was unprofessional and made an already heartbreaking situation even more distressing. In contrast, the doctors and other staff were compassionate, respectful, and professional. Unfortunately, the experience at the front desk was so off-putting that it nearly overshadowed the care provided beyond it. First impressions matter, and in this case, they were deeply negative

My dog Bunny had spay surgery here. The price was very reasonable compare to other places. People are very nice and surgery process was very smooth. Doctor did great job, the incision site is very smooth and healed very fast without any issues. She was back to normal next day and I put her on anti-licking suits, it worked perfect. The office is very clean and stuff are very pleasant. It's 3 mins drive. from my house, this is my new go to place. Thank you so much for great service. Highly recommended!
