How to Save Money at Highland Park Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Wonderful front desk. Very sweet. They got me in quickly considering I was a walk in and did my dogs laser therapy treatment after consult but be prepared to wait a bit if your a walk in. I came in at 7am and was out by 10 am. Considering I was a walk in consult and wanted laser therapy session that was pretty good in my opinion.

Just got our Sherlock’s updated vaccinations today. This is his regular vet. We love the vaccine clinic at a little discounted price. Staff is always super helpful even under busy busy hours. We were in & out within the hour.

My furry has been here get some tests done they're super busy, but they try to make the ways to get you answers and take care of you as best as they can I feel comfortable with this hospital and their prices are reasonable you just have to arrive early on time to get checked in no appointments usually they're booked up but it's worth the wait. Daisy feels she was treated well and is comfortable with the techs and the doctors there especially the receptionist they're very kind and sweet.

My partner and I are so, so grateful for the staff here. We called and they gave us suggestions for walk-ins, and they took care of us as soon as they could. Our dog, Dixie, was showing multiple symptoms of a UTI and was unable to work (she is a guide dog) because of her discomfort. — We previously took her to Banfield who said nothing was wrong with her and said they’d at most prescribe a sedative for the whimpering and pain she was experiencing when urinating. But it was the doctor at Highland Park Vet Hospital recognized her urine was diluted, believed the symptoms we expressed to them, suggested we get a bacteria/culture lab test and prescribed a general antibiotic while we waited for results. — They came back that Dixie did have a UTI, which would have gone untreated if this hospital didn’t give her the attention and care she needed. Dixie is all better now and we couldn’t be more grateful.

It appears they sliced the paw without telling us. And now there is black flesh hanging off the paw. According to them that's how she was when we brought her on Monday? We brought my late mom's pomeranian here because she had something on her paw that wasnt going away.a huge ball of growth by her pinky toe. Every night we change bandages and take pictures. After 6 weeks we brought her here. We weren't allowed to go in. They took bandages off and replaced them on Monday. Gave us antibiotics and NEVER said anything about hanging flesh. IT WASNT LIKE THAT THE NIGHT BEFORE AND WE HAVE PICTURES TO PROVE IT. They said she needed surgery to remove a tumor and that was it. Last night, we're changing bandages as usual and discovered she has hanging flesh that's turning black all of a sudden. Today we go back to find out what exactly did they do to our doggie? According to them she was like that on Monday AND NO ONE MENTIONED IT, NOR HAD US COME IN TO SEE WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE AFTER THEY REMOVED BANDAGES? NO ONE mentioned the severety other than 'ITS A TUMOR AND NEEDS TO BE REMOVED???? My parents brought all thier dogs and cats here from the 80's to 2007 and always had great service. This is incredibly disappointing and FISHY. Her paw looks like it was sliced. It's a bit too perfect. Medical Malpractice? Our photos are proof
