How to Save Money at DTLAvets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

It was my first time here, and I wasn’t sure what questions to ask i was fully trusting that they’d take good care of my cat and help him feel better again, they were informative but when I read over the papers it didn’t sit well with me that they charged me for walking in it’s UC their isn’t appointments for UC that’s why it’s separated from the appointments, they didn’t even tell me that he had gastroenteritis some other veterinarian brought me my cat someone that I didn’t even talk to the whole day I was their then I asked what happened to the lady she said she was gonna come back and give me some advise and feedback of what protocol to follow and he was the one that brought me the papers because i asked for copies of his blood work, and while he’s talking to me about giving my cat bland food I’m reading the paper and it says that he might have gastroenteritis WHAT!? im barley finding this out when im already stepping out I was shocked that they kept telling me everything was normal on him and that he was still nauseous I know he’s nauseous that’s why I brought him in, they did multiple tests and at the end of the day the summary described the diagnosis as POSSIBLE diagnosis so it’s not a final diagnosis, you took X-rays, bloodwork, radiography, you gave him three injections according to the bill, charged me for waiting for 5hours and the diagnosis come back as POSSIBLE how shocked would you be if someone kept telling you everything is good then you find out last minute by reading it that he might have something wrong. The only thing I was happy about was that he was super calm.

I took my dog into DTLAvets as a walk in emergency appointment today. My dog was seen in 20-30 mins. Tests were done, Xrays were taken, he was given medication and put back into my arms. As a frantic pet parent I was very pleased with my dog's care at DTLAvets. The staff was friendly, professional and cost conscious. All procedures were explained along with corresponding costs. Understanding that emergencies happen and pet parents are worried, the vet techs took extra time to answer my questions and get my dog's records from his regular vet. I felt my dog had thorough care at DTLAvets and I will definitely bring my dog back here.

I'm not sure how this place has so many reviews. I came in quite frantic at 6 pm on Thursday with an emergency as my ten week old puppy was having a seizure. I called ahead and was told that the puppy would be seen urgently. Once arrived a "vet tech" started doing vitals and asking questions I asked where the doctor was just for them to explain that the doctor was treating a sedated pet patient and it would be determined whether or not my puppy Could be seen based on criticality. I immediately begin called other pet hospitals then was asked to get off the phone so I could Provide my "full attention" and have a conversation with a vet tech. Then they asked me rhetorical questions to details I've already explained and had my sign paperwork saying I agree to emergency treatment potentially costing upwards of $500. 5 minutes later I was told To leave and given a listen or additional hospitals as my pet could not be seen by the doctor because they are closing and she was busy. I was completely shocked because I was calling other treatment centers and Akers to her off of the phone. Also, the hours on the website are listened until 10pm, it was 6pm!!! Don't go here, take tour pet to LAASER, 24 hour care work efficient staff who know how to promptly and properly handle emergency care. Absolutely ridiculous establishment with worse staff. A bunch of clowns work here with no sense of urgency or common sense in life threatening situations.

I like this place overall, but their communication amongst themselves is terrible. It seems nobody is ever on the same page, and now I am being billed more because I have to do an urgent care appointment after nobody scheduled the followup lab. I am being told it doesn't matter because they can do it all at once, yet it does in fact matter because there is a greater cost for urgent care than a tech doing a lab. This is of course also due to a very obvious contradiction of increasing a daily dose prednisone while giving antibiotics. Suppressing the immune system while giving antibiotics...and here we are 3 months later still with the same infection. I guess its profitable that my dog remains sick. They do seem to care, but the lack of communication presents it as if they only care about profit because of the situations it seems to result in time after time.
