How to Save Money at Carlsen Animal Hospital, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Originally when we brought our dog here we were so happy with the customer service and care that was provided for our pet. Unfortunately within the last 1-2 years the quality of care significantly decreased. We decided to switch vets because it felt unsettling when the last doctor who was summarizing our dogs visit confused our pet with another pet she previously saw. Fast forward to today, our new veterinarian went over our dog’s old records including his blood work here at Carlsen Animal Hospital. She had told us that he had elevated enzymes in his previous blood work done 2 years ago here. This elevated enzyme level could indicate liver disease or a bone disorder yet the doctor at animal Carlsen hospital NEVER mentioned to us once. We could have taken an early initiative to do additional testing for better treatment options or provide better care had we known that our dog’s blood work was abnormal earlier. It is so disappointing that due to this delay in information it could have caused potential harm to our dog. We would think Veterinarian clinics would want to do the complete opposite of harming our pets. We wouldn’t want any pet owner or pets to go through this. We definitely recommend taking your pet elsewhere!

Amazingly kind receptionists and vet staff - call before hand for a time that's not busy, it will make your life and their service much better! They will really look after your pet, my dog is always so stoked to visit. After nutering he wasn't feeling or acting his normal self, they asked us to bring him back in for a day. After that pick up he was the healthiest happiest pup I've ever seen. They even called a week after to see how he was doing. Their love and care for your pet really shows in my experience.

My family and I could not be more grateful for the high-quality of care provided by Dr. Bhuta and her incredible staff. Thanks to everyone there for their infinite knowledge & compassion for animals. The doctor only wanted to do what was best for the doggy. Dr. Bhuta educated our family on a complicated diagnosis as well as its necessary procedures in a way that we could each process well enough to be able to share with our extended family and friends effectively. She is also extremely genuine. The support members of her team each took their time with us as patience, acting professional, polite, and caring. Huge thanks to Dr. B, Nicole, and the team at Carlsen Animal. Dr. Bhuta is an angel. I hope you will do yourself and your fur baby a favor and go see the team at Carlsen Animal Hospital if you are in need of an animal expert for any reason.

Where do I start? After having two dogs go to Carlsen Animal Hospital for the past 25 years I received the most callous and non-responsive treatment from Carlsen Animal Hospital imaginable! My dog woke up very lethargic and refused to move from the front door. I called Carlsen and asked if I could bring in my dog because I had never seen her behave this way. They told me they were booked up and 'it didn't sound too serious, and I can bring her in the next day." When I persisted she told me to take her to the emergency room if I was concerned and then rudely said, "hold on please" and disconnected me. I called back and asked if I could speak to a tech or a vet, since (Debbie) was just a receptionist. She said, "no, they were too busy." I asked to speak to her supervisor, whom she said was not in yet (it was already 10:30AM), but she would leave a message and call me back. Two hours passed and I called back and asked to speak to Supervisor ("Devin") who told me she got the message but didn't have time yet to call me back. I informed her of my dog's condition and how I would like to speak to some medical staff if I should take my dog to the E.R. (knowing how expensive an E.R. visit could be and I would like a little professional counsel). She told me everyone was unavailable and I should use my own judgement. I then spoke to another callous, detached person (Danielle) who reiterated the same information. "Doesn't sound too serious. We'll see you tomorrow." This is after giving them 25 years of business! Bottom line: I found another vet who squeezed her in and told me to immediately take her to the ER, as my dog was bleeding out and needed emergency surgery (which I did). Carlsen never even called to inquire about us not coming in for our appointment the next day, or even how our dog, who has been with them since she was a puppy, was doing. Carlsen Animal Hospital states on their website that "Empathetic, efficient and thorough care is what you can expect as a pet owner." Well maybe that was once true when Carlsen owned this hospital. But he has since retired and sold his business, and what has replaced him is a callous, uncaring and soulless staff! Needless to say, I will never bring another pet to this Hospital and i urge you to be very cautious having them take care of your pets.

Carlsen Animal Hospital is the only place I trust to take the best care of my cat, Spoon. The staff are kind, friendly, knowledgable and willing to work with their clients to ensure their pets' safety and wellbeing is prioritized. I am so thankful for their willingness to work with my financial needs, and highly recommend them as a business. Dr. Golshahi is seriously incredible- she loves the animals she works with it and it shows. I'll always continue to return here for Spoon's care!
